I wanted to like this so much more than I did. Plot had a lot of potential but the writing is just all over the place.

I immediately want to start this one from the beginning omg it is so good!
I sat on this review for a while because I can't say I disliked this book, but I can't say I really liked it either. I was really interested in reading a story from Ferren's point of view. A priestess with telepathic powers, who goes on a quest on a faraway planet with a masked commander as her bodyguard? Sign me up! The problem with those characters was the lack of opportunity to actually interact and build a relationship based on something other than smoldering eyes (which, in the case of the Commander, you don't see) and insta-lust.
So if you forget about the missing chapters where we should be at least shown what made those two fall for each other, the plot was actually nice enough. I loved the final few chapters, where everything comes crashing down for Ferren - not out of sheer cruelty, but because good villains make stories so much greater. The Highest Priestess makes for one shady bitch.
Anyway - I don't care enough about the overarching plot to read the next book in the series. I actually feel satisfied with Ferren's story.
