There were some ROUGH moments in this book and a lot of frustration at these imperfect people, but that kind of made it better.
A horrible event has altered this young boys life and then he gets the opportunity to learn the truth if the events. Every character in the book can be frustrating, but that's because they all seemed like real people with flaws and vices.
There were some scenes that I felt myself skimming through rather than reading because they got technical or repetitive, but overall, I was entertained and engaged the whole time. There were lots of Rollercoaster to ride in here!
I would definitely recommend for fans of crime fiction books!

Akhirnya selesain 560 halaman dalam 2 hari. Gila, ini aku gak pernah kayaknya selesaikan novel setebel ini secepet ini dengan kerapatan dan kecilnya ukuran tulisan. Tapi saking udah sukanya sama penulis, aku penasaran. Menjelang akhir-akhir bacaan, aku padukan teknik baca scanning dan skimming. Gak sabar ndang mari ndang wes. Bagus banget ini novel. Rapi dalam menyusun cerita. Gambarin keadaannya juga detail. Kalo mau belajar tulisan novel yang bagus kayak gmn, bis ke sini. Dari setelah bab 1 kelar, aku udah salah duga siapa pembunuhnya. Dan kita udah langsung tahu siapa pembunuhnya sebenarnya di perempat isi novel. Tapi pembunuhan itu adalah sebuah kecelakaan yang gak disengaja. Kita juga jadi belajar dari kasus pembunuhan tu. Si pembunuh gak mau segera ngaku, jadi dia sembunyiin, mikul rahasia besar, dan gusar sepanjang cerita. Nah yang rada psikopat ternyata Si X. Benar-benar passionate banget ngungkapin puzzle pembunuhan anaknya. Trus juga di sini kita belajar, sepandai-pandainya tupai melompat akan jatuh juga. Pembunuh akhirnya ketahuan, tp pembunuh gak lebih kejam daripada Si X ini.

I loved this book! So starts of a little slow and your kinda wondering where this is going BUT once it gets going it is so good. I can only think of one other character I hated more then I hated the dad in this book. Which is as good thing, having that much emotion makes you wanna know more and see if they get what they deserve. This book in a way reminds me of the movie I saw the devil. A man trying to get revenge regardless what it took BUT you aren't on his side b/c he is such a horrible man and only doing it for his selfish gain.

Am I ever going to read a bad Korean thriller? Or a bad Korean novel full stop? Nope, I don't think so!
This author (whose book 'The Good Son') I have recently read and adored, delivered yet again with 'Seven Years of Darkness' - her newer thriller set around a small village outside Seoul where a young girl tragically dies, and the whole village (including a number of workers at the nearby Arboretum and the father of the girl) must race against the clock to uncover the true story of what happened to her. Whilst also throwing up numerous terrible secrets of their own. Is anyone truly innocent and will justice ever be done? This was just so brilliant and wonderfully written - I would liken it to something like 'Line of Duty' where if you look away or miss one second then you are stumped and therefore it's really important to give the text your full attention. I loved the story going backwards in time to the event and then to the present from the son of the supposed killer's perspective and then back even further before the event takes place. What if I run out of these amazing Korean stories? Please, Korean thriller authors keep writing!!!

While I preferred The Good Son, this novel is still fantastic. Jeong Youjeong is masterful in creating these grey worlds in her fiction. I can't wait to see which one of her novels gets translated next!
