There are things that I can appreciate about this book, I enjoyed the depth and exploration of character, however, I just could not get that into it.
The humour was enjoyable and I liked when it explored the dangers and seductions of capital and I know that it was left unfinished but I wish there was more to it as well

Despite being unfinished this novel contains powerful themes about the dangers that come with the willingness to do anything for power and wealth. Despite having a fairly good position several times, Chichikov falls victim to his own ambition and commits crimes that lead to his ousting of each society he is a part of. Chichikov has no distinction between right and wrong and overestimates the simplicity of his fellow humans. When met with the consequences of his crimes he quickly repents and swears rehabilitation of which we never see the completion.
An excellent read that utilizes humor and deep characters to explore issues of ambition and morality.

Ok really enjoyed this but since the latter 2/3rds of the manuscript were BURNED by the AUTHOR.....i could have done without the confusion. also wish i could read Russian because I'd love to get the actual humor the way Gogol intended. veryyyyyy funny shit here, men used to concoct grand fraudulent schemes just to meet a girl!
