Anyone who gives this 5 stars is valid, it’s good. But also, anyone who doesn’t give it 5 stars is just as valid. This really is a classic that I just don’t resonate well with. It’s nearly impossible for me to imagine yearning for someone as selfish as Daisy Buchanan like Jay Gatsby did. One thing I have always been proud of myself for is my ability to see the good in people even if it’s hard to. Here, I see the good in Daisy. It’s the fact that she just lets that goodness waste away and her selfish side win every time. When someone sees the good in you, like Jay Gatsby does with Daisy, it’s now your job to believe in yourself too. I fear Daisy was too far gone to do so, and that felt shameful. It’s tragic, but what I love about tragedies is when they at least TRY to be better even if they lose in the end. Unfortunately in this case, I wasn’t even rooting for Daisy or Gatsby or Nick or anyone. It was just like watching a bunch of rich brats see EXACTLY why they should change, and yet they do absolutely nothing about it.

The tension keeps rising and rising throughout this book, as the characters live this lavish lifestyle, for which the narrator judges them immensely, and we, the readers, can't help but feel that somehow it all must come crashing down because it cannot be sustained.
I thought that aspect of it was really well done, but that said, I didn't love this, but maybe that's because the narrator really dislikes so many of the people he meets (and I get it, that's kind of the point).
