To put it simply, I didn't get what I signed up for when I first opened this book, and throughout the book, until the very last bit. I felt that the story was really badly linked. I get the need for background information, but to just deliver them in short bits without any link really made me feel like I was reading separate stories in the initial phases of the book. So, not really that good of a book for me. Ultimately, it really failed in making me want to continue to read it, I was numerously tempted to call it quits on the book.
Really great book but very long. It’s a great twist on vampires and every time an old vampire trope was turned into a symptom or weakness, I got very excited. And I wouldn’t have even necessarily called myself a vampire person. I enjoy a good pre-apocalypse to Day 0 to post-apocalypse story and I liked the journal endured and pieces of media sprinkled throughout the book. I found myself really enjoying the book and finished it in 4 days. I do have a few criticisms. The plot seemed to screech to a halt in the last 200ish pages and the characters didn’t seem to act like they had been up to that point. There were also soap opera level events happening and at one point I felt like I was reading the script of a bad TV show. Also, I felt that Amy’s character wasn’t developed well enough and that I barely knew her despite her being like the most important part of the book. I’m not sure if I’ll read the sequels but this was definitely a strong first book despite my criticisms.
This is, perhaps, the best vampire book I’ve ever read. It reads very much like a Stephen King book, where not much happens for a long time but it’s still somehow engaging and exciting. Where this book does not compare to SK is in how women are written- this author does a *much* better job IMO. I’ll happily read the next books in the trilogy- but I may need to reread this book first. I find myself ready to immediately re-read it even, which is really unusual for me.

W stylu i klimacie sporo różni się to co dostajemy dalej. Turaj mamy typowe przetrwanie oraz przekręty ludzi. Kolejny etap, czyli dalsze 250 stron mamy już ukazane około 90 lat wprzód. Możemy zobaczyć jak teraz ludzie żyją, z czym się mierzą itd. Jakkolwiek interesujące to jednak jest to też trochę rozwleczone. I od strony 500 akt 3 czyli w sumie ludzie podejmują jakieś akcje.
Całość była interesująca. Na pewno jest to tytuł dla tych co lubią postapo bo klimat ukazany jest bardzo dobrze. Ogólnie pomimo jak bardzo długa jest ta książka, bo patrząc na ilość słów na stronie to odczuwa się ją jako grubszą niż 800 stron to bawiłam się z nią dobrze i przebrnęłam w miarę łatwo. Jednakże było kilka elementów, które mnie wręcz irytowały. Te "wiedzenie" bohaterów o czymś, które dość często się zdarzało. Oni nie mają przeczuć, oni wiedzą. Jakby skąd? Dalej uważam, że dostaliśmy fajnych mutantów więc po co komplikować to i dodawać jakeś czary mary z ich snami i psychiką. Totalnie zbędne to było. I ta jedna decyzja z armią, której ja totalnie nie rozumiem i jak się okazało nic nie wniosła ona do fabuły. Autor powinien przestać wciskać każdy pomysł do tej książki.

After almost 200 pages, we hadn't gotten anywhere, I still don’t get what’s going on, and I don’t care about any of the characters.
