The Passage

Interesting post-apocalyptic version of the vampire mythology. I'm looking forward to the sequel to find out what happens to the world and what the scary little 100 year old girl can do to save mankind.

With detailed narratives, I usually find myself skipping pages to get to the meat, but I didn't do that with this book. The story was compelling, kept changing and was well-paced for its size. I couldn't put it down at times, which depending on who you are can be a big problem or a blessing. It had a zombie vibe at times (the mindless hungry mass), but I like that stuff. The ending wasn't epic, but I'm ok with that. Overall, loved it.
dark mysterious medium-paced

Flaws of characters a main focus: Yes

I winced when I saw Stephen King praising it on the back-I went through a Stephen King phase when I was ten or so but by fifteen I was starting to realize I really didn't like his books-but a book blogger I like loved this book. I gave it a good chance, kept forcing myself to go on even though I was bored from about page fifty, but I just couldn't do it. People who enjoy novels by Stephen King would probably like this.

Really enjoyed the start but then it dragged on a bit. Long epics/sagas are just not for me

Virus. Check! Vampires. Check! A little girl in a big scary world. Check!
If you love to read end of the world books, or ones where everyone is struck down with a virus, then this is the book for you. The BIG BAD is coming and Amy can feel it. No one knows who Amy is or where she comes from, or just what part she has to play in this whole adventure.
One thing that annoyed me about this book is that I just got invested in all the players and BAM! Jump forward a hundred years and get to know more people. I kept waiting for the penny to drop and for another time jump but thankfully, we stay with this new group until the end. Not only that, we get re-intoduced to some of the players we were previously invested in.
I loved the good versus bad versus the very bad that takes place within this storyline. Not everyone who is good stays that way, just as not everyone who is bad turns very bad. There are many moving parts to this story and I loved every bit of it.
I think one of my favourite parts, however, was Justin at the end of the book talking about where the idea for The Passage came from and how the story developed. Make sure you read this bit because it makes the story seem so much more real to you, especially in understanding how something like this comes about.

Yes I finished! First off, fair warning this is a loooooong book and some parts are just slow. However the first 1/3 and last 1/3 are really good and compelling. Second, if you view this book as a journey (or passage) it does become a lot more enjoyable read. I started to see influential elements of other literature: like War and Peace, Watership Down, and Lord of the Rings (LOTR). In particular, Peter and Amy are aspects of the Ring. It is fun to compare and contrast LOTR journey and this one. I loved the end QA with the author and how this story grew from his love and morning runs with his daughter. Together they "wrote" this book and that is strongly felt throughout the book. I did stop reading in the middle due to frustration with being introduced to yet another set of characters and time but it all makes sense in the end.

The transition in this book from present day to the future was so jarring and unexpected for me that I nearly DNFed this book. The description gave no inkling of what to expect, and I had become so invested in the original storyline that the abrupt shift about 20% into the novel almost put me off. Although I gradually grew to like the 'new' story, I never enjoyed it as much as I did the first 20% in the present day.

Must read series. 💕💕💕
