hmmmm. many thoughts. i need to circle back to this one. first impression, i don’t love how much the author yanks you around to create suspense. two, oddly religious.
edit: after coming back to this review, this is what i think. i was entranced by the premise, and really loved the first half of the book.
Spoiler it started to go downhill after the end of the world occurred, and i just didn't care as much after that.
it was as if the characters couldn't catch a break, so i wasn't even sure about who to care about anymore. that's when the more "unexplainable" things began to happen, and i hated basically every decision the author made from there. killing off hightop AFTER the escape?? theo was magically saved or something from his attacker?? AMY GOT RID OF ALL THE VIALS?? the ENTIRE colony DIED?? the colony we had spent around 500 pages reading about?? just hit after hit man. and the point of it all was that amy was the vessel or something, and could allow the shades to pass on to the next life? how does that help?? they're all dead still! it just wasn't very satisfying, in my opinion, and left a really bad taste in my mouth.
in conclusion, i liked half of this book. i loved anything to do with brad, the best/ most interesting character (he deserved more time, damn you). i did not enjoy the second half, and have 0 desire to read a sequel. good lord, this 700+ page behemoth doesn't need any follow ups!

So far this is my favorite trilogy of all time. I still think of these books often.

Hellsyes.

October 2018: Listening to this one just in time. It's a dim memory and just as gripping as it was the first time. I remember every minute why I threw the brake pedal on life and fell headlong into this one the first time around.

**Done now. Great reader. Great story. Audio was a great way to re-engage so that I can finish the other two books in this series.

I felt like this was six books squooshed together and I only liked two of them.

DID NOT FINISH: 52%

Half way through and I cannot get into it

time to read the sequels on wikipedia

edit: very glad i did not read those, woof.

First part of this book is really great. But once those characters got left behind for a new set of boring characters I lost interest and couldn't stick with it. Extremely disappointing.

DID NOT FINISH

I DNF'd around pages 330-340. I tried so hard to stay interested in this book but I couldn't. 70% of it was fluff and boring fillers and 30% of it was where anything important actually happened.
