I'm not very familiar with Amy Schumer's work. Aside from her awesome movie "Trainwreck", my experience with her work has been based primarily on Old Navy commercials and the occasional spot in the media. But I figured she would be funny and I wanted something funny and light to read.
Funny, check. Light, not really. This was surprising.
Actually, what is really surprising is that Amy Schumer can surprise at all. She's so brazen and bold ... you'd think it would be hard for her to shock anyone at this point. And yet the book is overflowing with unexpected things. Everything from revealing her struggles with introversion to her personal experiences with date rape and domestic violence.
The book is conversational and confessional. It's honest and full of heart. She owns her mistakes, her flaws, and her shortcomings in a way that guards her vulnerability (teach me to do this!) Hidden underneath her carefree, unsophisticated style is something deeper. She has something to say and wisdom to share. She forces you to love her ugly back tattoo. I simply love her message and the way she lives her life.

Thank you for speaking up for those of us that don't have a voice.
Amy is funny but I appreciate her more for her blatant honesty. This book was very much like Amy, straight to the point. She didn't sugar coat her journey. Its been awhile since I read it but it was a decent read.
3.5 stars. This book is definitely different than I expected. I ended up getting more therapy from it than humor, but that's not necessarily a bad thing.
Basically if you are looking for a funny book only, this isn't for you.

Prudish readers and adamant intellectuals: beware! This was a very funny book that was meant to make you laugh and make you think—but not think so much that it interrupts your laughing. I mean, when was the last time you laughed out loud at a book? It was a nice change of pace.
Vulnerable and real, even if her humor doesn't always resonate with me. Extra star granted for the audiobook version.
Popsugar Challenge: an audiobook
What I love about this book is the wide range of emotions I went through while listening to it. It's heartfelt and it's sad and it's informative in addition to being wildly hilarious. You learn about her dad's disease, her dysfunctional childhood, her abusive relationship, her successes & failures (both on career and personal levels) and so much more. There were moments when I laughed so hard I thought I'd pee myself; there were also moments where she made me cry, which was unexpected but also appreciated. The fact that I listened to this on audio and she narrated was the icing on the cake. There are parts where you can tell she got emotional as she was reading, which brought her words to life. Toward the end she writes about the catalyst for her strong stance on gun control, which was really eye-opening for me.
You should read this, but you should DEFINITELY see if your library has the audiobook first, because it was a really fun experience.

I adore Amy, and some of her stories are great, but mostly I was just kind of bored with this book. Maybe I just isn't in the right mood for it ::shrug::
I really enjoyed the audiobook, narrated by Schumer herself! It was the perfect balance of comedy, memoir, and cultural commentary. I've read a lot of memoirs by women in comedy (Tina Fey, Amy Poehler, Lena Dunham, and Mindy Kahling) and this was one of my faves!

Summary:
Amy essays on her life, family, relationships, sex, and the experiences that shape us all. She gives you a hard glimpse behind the doors of her psyche while giving you a laugh. Heartfelt, harrowing, raucous, romantic...a late night talk with a good friend over ice cream, yogurt...bourbon.

Why this book:
Because I have loved her work and meant to read this whenever it fell into my hands.

The Feel:
Written like you are having a conversation with her instead of her telling you what she wants to.
Favorite Scene / Quote/Concept:
The Open Letter to My Vagina was a helluva mood setter for opening the book.
“People like women with more to their bodies too.” Some prefer women with meat on their souls. Someone who is more than just the meat their skeleton carries around.
The Sigh:
The Amy vs guns essay is heartwrenching. If that many NRA members support background checks, they need to stage a coup and force out the bullshit gun nut mentality of their leadership. Of course, that may be what was at the base of Oliver North being forced out.
Wisdom:
I agree with her take on young girls being brought up as hostesses. My girls were brought up to realize that any bridge can be broken or burned if need be. They don’t have to be nice to everybody. And that what they think and feel is important. And if that makes them as Amy self applies “a cunt” then so be it. This bastard is proud of them.
Juxtaposition:
Talks about learning what kind of person someone is by what they post on Instagram...and admitting that she loves posting pictures of her sister...picking up her dog’s shit while they are walking.
The Unexpected:
As I flipped through the pages of this library book, I found a Jack In The Box reciept. In light of how Amy talks about life and food, it made me giggle, felt almost like a feature of the book rather than something left behind.
Missed Opportunity:
Hot Dogs and Lesbians should totally be a bar.
