Heart pounding mystery thriller. Callie, Kai and Shay are caught in an outbreak of a highly contagious disease. A small portion are immune, like Kai. An even smaller portion survive, and develop strange abilities as a result. Shay has done so. And Callie...Callie is something completely different...

A brilliant opening to this trilogy, fast paced and terrifying. The only problem now is, I have to wait for the next one to see what happens next! Let's hope it's not too long, I'm dying...but not of Glasgow Flu...to see what becomes of them!

This would have had a 4 star rating if it was a bit shorter, it just felt really long and drawn out which made it a bit harder to read. The premise was intriguing but I don't think I'll continue with the series

When this book arrived after I won it in a Goodreads giveaway I was quite intrigued by it. It's a very striking book with it's black cover and dyed red page edges it looked great! The blurb was also appealing so I picked this one up as an antidote to a more challenging read I had just completed.
At the start of the book we meet Shay (short for Sharona, after 'that' song), she's moved from London to Scotland and is something of an introvert, singled out as different by the locals in her rural Trossachs village. When she spots a flyer for a missing girl who her didactic memory tells her she saw a year ago, she meets Kai, searching for his Sister Callie, and their stories begin to intertwine with devastating consequences.
Callie's story starts at a secret facility on Shetland which fails, leading to the evacuation of the island and a strange and virulent epidemic beginning in Aberdeen which kills people quickly and spreads even faster. Shay and Kai are placed in grave danger and must use all of their skills to evade capture and try to find the source of the Aberdeen flu.
This is a very fast paced book and we see the story split between Callie and Shay's perspective over and over again, with some parts narrated too so there are three clear 'voices' in the book. I'm generally not a massive fan of this style of novel but it worked well to expose the story in this one and the shortness of the chapters kept me turning the pages.
As a dystopian outbreak novel nothing is really beyond the boundaries and, while it's quite far fetched at times, and a little too easy for the protagonists to achieve their aims occasionally, sometimes you just can't beat a read that keeps you turning the pages over and over again. I'm really looking forward to the next book in the trilogy as Contagion leaves so many questions unanswered. I really enjoyed this one.

I was rather disappointed by this book. I loved Teri's Shattered series, so I really thought this that book would bring the same fire as the other series.

Unfortunately this just didn't hit the spot for me. I wasn't really a fan of the characters. I didn't really like Callie. Considering she is 12(?) she came across rather mature for her age. So when she made childish decisions it sat wrong with me because she never came across as young and it had the opposite effect even if her feelings or actions could have been justified.

I can't say whether I liked Shay or Kai in all honesty. I don't really feel like they were developed properly. Also the insta-love between them just came out of no where. I felt like once they fell in 'love' with one another within a couple of days, they were no longer individuals. Whenever Shay and Kai were separated, it's as if they could not cope on their own. They could not function on their own. If they'd been together for a longer period of time I may have been able to understand that, but only knowing one another for a couple of days, I often snorted every time they were desperate to reconnect or even when they were together.

The beginning of the story of where Callie was, really interested me. I wanted to know the reason as to why she was there. Why was she different from others? How come we can see her this way? I felt like the beginning in regards to Caliie's story was rather rushed and I counld't understand why she wouldn't want to investigate further. I didn't feel like questions were answered. Another thing that really bothered me was what was supposed to be the big reveal! It was so obvious and the fact that it hadn't been guessed by the characters was just shockingly stupid.

So unfortunately I don't think I'll be reading part 2.

I know this hasn't been officially released yet, but I was lucky enough to get a copy at YALC 2016. I have to say, I quite liked this story. It was a great young adult book, definitely aimed at under 15 or 16 I'd say. It has a good storyline, good characters and the writing is great.

Zusammengefasst

Started this book and took a while to get into it which was a shame because it looked really good and the reviews were amazing. But maybe this style of writing just wasn’t for me :( I got a few chapters in and seriously was just really bored so had to put it down. This isn’t like me at all, even if I struggle with a book at first, I always try to get at least half way through before deciding whether I’ll finish it or not. However, this just obviously wasn’t the book for me. What a shame.

A good read, but I didn't enjoy it as much as Slated. It got a bit too fantastical.

A really interesting plotline, and I loved where it was all based.

I loved the idea of the flu and how everything is quarantined, especially after experiencing something similar, and seeing how this was written beforehand makes it all come to life a bit more.

I loved Callie's character and really sympathised with her. Kai and Shay were a little annoying, though, and their romance seemed really pushed and quick.

Otherwise, a quick enjoyable read.
