The New Wife

I’m very aware of this kind of twisty tale book and although this was my first by the author I did enjoy it BUT I did think it took a while to get going and I persevered where I thought others might not. But when it picked up the pace, I loved it.

This book, labeled as a thriller, should ideally grip me right from the opening chapter. However, it is a slowburn, focusing primarily on unraveling mysteries. The characters Ruensa and Roze seem to harbor secrets, while Finn appears somewhat naive, influenced by his recently acquainted stepmother and stepsister who are dealing with recent widowhood. Unfortunately, the overall plot lacks a compelling execution.

The New Wife is a standalone psychological thriller by author, JP. Delaney. I’ve read this author before and this one was my favorite so far. I enjoyed JP Delaney’s adept writing style and the unique Mediterranean setting. This one left me feeling turned inside out and upside down the rabbit hole on a roller coaster of suspense and twists. I had no idea where this one was going but I was eager to find out. I finished it in one sitting. JP Delaney knows how to write an original and engrossing thriller. This one won’t be my last by this author. The idealistic setting, naïve main character and romance elements leave us unsure who to trust in this one where everything seems just a little bit off. I enjoyed having the rug swept out from under me. I look forward to reading more by this author in the future.

I have loved every JP Delaney book I have read so far, this one whilst still a good read its wasn't the usual compelling thriller I have come to expect from this author, it was more of a slow burn type of read and I just don't usually rate slow burn thrillers as highly as I want a thriller to grab me from at least the first 2 chapters and hold me captive and almost holding my breath until the ending. I know I have high expectations but as life is short I need my thrillers to be compelling and to haunt me when I am not reading them.  Siblings Finn and Jess learn their father has died and it’s not a cause of sorrow. The pair will inherit the Mallorcan finca their father has lived in with his third wife Ruensa and her daughter Roze. Finn agrees to travel to the Balearic Islands, partly out of curiosity to meet wife number three, but principally to stake their claim to the finca. What follows on this beautiful island takes a distinct path to uncertainty. I loved the short chapters and the twist was one I didnt predict, it was still a good read, more a slow unravelling of people with a mysterious past than what I would deem as a thriller.  What was clever was that my suspicions kept bouncing around between the characters and I had no idea who to believe. #jpdelaney #thenewwife #tea_sipping_bookworm #goodreads #thestorygraph #getlitsy #bookqueen #bookstagram

Inititially I thought Finn's feeling for Roze seemed to develop and escalate too quickly and it seemed a little weird that he was so trusting of the 2 women that had the opportunity to kill his father. It felt a little creepy but as I continued to read and things started to unfold, I realised that it was intentional and tjis actually showed how good the writing was.

The stoy is told mostly as a memoir, although that isn't really revealed until the end and so the occasional shift from past to present tense and the forshadowing started to make more sense as the plot developed.

The world building was beautifully done. This book is set in Mallorca (an island near Spain). I've actually been there myself and the descriptions of the landscape and the lifestyle was spot on, I was immediately transported there.

I liked how the author kept me guessing when it came to what was true and what wasn't.

I liked the final chapter which was from Jess' POV but I didn't like the ending. I feel like there was so many things left unanswered and the death of their dad was never really solved. The author did add that this was intentional as she wanted the reader to make their own judgements.

I would've liked some POVs from Roze or any other character, maybe one of the lawyers, just to add some other perspectives but I can also see how the author wanted to focus on Finn and his infatuation.

I would say this book is more mystery than thriller. While I did enjoy reading it, I wish the thriller element was stronger and focused on more, with more plot twists.
