Typically I love odd books but this was just not good. Full of short stories that could've been more flushed out and ideas that did not make sense or were just odd/not at all interesting.

I really liked the idea of this book but I am sad that the execution was not what I wanted :(

Obscure and yet relatable, skillfully finding the erotic in the ordinary and absurd. There’s a sumptuous yet simple exploration and description of dreams and eroticism. Some grounded and some expansive these stories provide a slip into the dreaming and a glimpse of the alternate. Really curious, would maybe like to read it alongside the original French?

I bought this on sale at my local bookshop. And let me tell you it was worth every penny of entertainment.

Translated from French, gentleman callers is a series of short stories where a woman dreams about various romantic and sexual interludes she has with various male individuals. These get increasingly more strange, not really disturbing but strange for certain. Even in the strange circumstances it's hard not to enjoy the pov of a sponge who is being used by a car washer. It's oddly saucy and sensual, but you can't help but marvel at the care and seriousness the author is translating romantic feelings to  objects and non traditional lovers.

It is definitely not everyone but it's pretty original and spectacular.

Imaginative and doesn't take itself too seriously.

Anyone can be an object of desire, but who is the subject of desire?

A woman dreams and dreams until she is desired by men she has never met. Men she has come across in passing, in pure imagination, only to be felt as soap, as marble, as object. Where does desire begin? At the hands? In the eyes? At what point is it felt? In the core? By grazing? By grace?

She dreams and dreams until she is nothing. She dreams and dreams until the desire is overwhelming. She dreams and dreams until she is desire herself. Until she is invention. Until she is invented.

Woman is absence of the self when felt so deeply, when feeling is a despair tied at the mercy of wanting and needing.

Short. Sweet. Savored in thirst that hollows into hunger. Best read when your naked and lonesome, listening to old EP's by Kelela and FKA Twigs

Various erotic fantasies, sometimes uncomfortable but always rich in metaphor and imagery. A fun read for a book slump. Each story is super quick!
