This was an interesting 3.5 star read for me. This book was strange. Jack was the worst. It kept me hooked and reading, and yet felt flat at parts. The ending was great, and yet I was left with a few questions. I think I would recommend it if you like quirky horror books.

I feel a bunch of different ways about this book. I listened to the audiobook, and enjoyed the narrator. He did a good job of making us hate this insufferable character Jack. I know we were meant to hate Jack, but it did feel a bit too over the top. I think if there were less reminders of the same self obsession it would have been a little more believable.

However, I did enjoy thinking I had a good idea of what was going on but in reality I didn't.

I enjoyed this so much! The set up of celebrity journalist Jack Sparks writing a book where he tries to find proof of, or rather to debunk, the supernatural was fun in of itself, and although he is an asshole, I kind of liked his snarky tone. Then there is the twist that Jack Sparks died under slightly mysterious circumstances while writing the book, and his brother and his agent/editor finished and published the book. This is revealed in the book’s introduction written by Jack’s brother. So right from the start, you think you know what’s going to happen to Jack - but, well, you don’t 😂 this book has layers and trapdoors, and truly everything is connected. The spooky stuff was awesome,  there were some really creepy scenes in here, plus once the story really goes off the rails and escalate towards the end, there’s some very fun bloody horror happening as well. Really enjoyed this!

I found the main character kinda insufferable in the first half, not gonna lie, but the second half makes it worth putting up with him.

The sheer amount of 5 star reviews should have been warning enough, but I misinterpreted it thinking this was the case of an actual great book and I jumped at the chance to read it.
The Jack Sparks character is disagreeable, which is the author’s aim, but cartoonishly so.
The plot is a bit thin, though the ending is quite good and surprising, but not enough so for redemption.
