A really clever concept that was fun to read but it wasn't overly scary or funny, I was hoping for something more. I get the feeling that it might stick with me for a while though, definitely lots to think about - might even be worth revisiting in a couple of months.
Think this will prove to be a popular read, it really does have a interesting couple of twists.
Thank you to NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I really wanted to like this book, and in parts I did. The scares were pretty good the ending was very fast paced. But at times I thought what was supposed to be deep was very eye-roll-y. You’re supposed to hate the main character for the most part, then pity him but I had a hard time as I usually like to connect to the main character. Maybe it’ll grow on me more after I think about it longer.

A fun romp with a narcissist and demon possession.

2.5/5

I'm not sure what to say. Many people love this book, and after reading reviews, I was convinced I would love it. I didn't but I didn't dislike it either.

By the halfway point, I found myself bored instead of feeling scared or surprised. It could be my overworked brain (closing out the year at work is always hectic), but I just don't understand the hype for this book.

Jack comes across as the worst kind of person—arrogant, narcissistic, and selfish. Despite what some say about Jack being funny, I don't find him amusing; he seems more like a high-class bully.

In any case, I'm rather disappointed with this one.

I might return to this when I need a main character to hate read.
Otherwise, this was just too much of an unlikable character for me

this book was so extremely up my alley and also just generally very fun. Jack Sparks is a guy that I absolutely would hate to hang out with but was written in such compelling fashion that I almost loved him, and the writing carried the narrative really beautifully in terms of character voices and styles

Honestly not super sure of my thoughts on this book right now that's how wacked out it got in the last like third of the book. The ending was so abrupt... like I get why it ended there and it makes sense but I'm also like what happened next!!! Kind of wish there had been some sort of afterward from his brother or something to wrap up what we had read. But also who knows if Alistair is as unreliable as Jack? Like good lord that guy SUCKED. What an unlikeable narrator he really ate shit. I feel like the concept of this book was scarier than the execution. Kind of in the same way as Horrorstor like it got weirdly really gory. I wish it had been more focused on Maria and the demon and that stuff cause I feel like the whole experiment and the ego thing and all of that got warped and weird... and I didn't super love it. I think I liked the first half of the book better than the second. But then you think again like what if this was all in his head who knows. What a mindfuck.

Very scary at times with a protagonist that you don't like but can't help but follow.
