i read this quite awhile ago but i just got goodreads SO. here’s my review :)

i am not a poetry person AT ALL. so I didn’t expect to like this book as much as i did. it was an easy read and i remember just binge reading it because i liked it so much. it was so different and unique to any other book i’ve read and i loved that. i thought it was a beautiful message and honestly just a great book overall.

I wish I would have read this sooner!
That was incredible, easily five stars.

...
I'm a sucker for coming of age stories.
The discussion of religion gave me a new perspective as someone who has not grown up in a very religious household. The last poem really shifted how I view religion.

Beautiful and poignant and hopeful!!

“I only know that learning to believe in the power of my own words has been the most freeing experience of my life. It has brought me the most light. And isn't that what a poem is? A lantern glowing in the dark.”

This was incredible. Books like this remind me why the YA genre is important. I can't believe I waited so long to get to this, because the poetry aspect was intimating for me. Elizabeth Acevedo is a master with words I'm so happy I read this gem of a book.

This was a very beautiful book. It was told In verse so it was a very quick read.

Xiomara discovers slam poetry as a way to understand her mother's religion and her relationship with the world. She feels unheard and begins to pour all her frustration and passion into a leather notebook. Her mother was very tough on her. I found my self angry at her at times. She did stuff I could never imagine doing to my own child. She basically crushed all her daughters happiness, dreams and confidence.

Xiomara finally starts to find her place in the world when she is invited to join her schools slam poetry club even though she knows her mom would not approve. She also starts to have feelings for a boy in her bio class but knows her mom could never find out because she is determined to have Xiomara obey the church.

I feel this is an important book for teenage girls to read because she is also learning to deal with her body and her hormonal changes. Her twin brother also goes through some things that their mom would not approve of. I would love to hear more about his story. I ended up crying towards the end of this book. ❤
