My niece and I are still reading the Wings of Fire series together. The first series under that title is five books long (then there are other spinoff series/books) and this one is #4, [b:The Dark Secret,|17675467|The Dark Secret (Wings of Fire, #4)|Tui T. Sutherland|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1368813111l/17675467._SY75_.jpg|24679204] so you know things are building to a climax. There were some exciting twists revealed here, some stuff I guessed, some stuff that caught me off-guard! And like the previous books, the narrator (this time Starflight) had his own growth. He went from being the most timid of his siblings to someone who takes risks, takes charge. I didn't enjoy the volcanic setting as much as I did the sea kingdom or the rainforest, but then, I wasn't supposed to; it's deliberately a very desolate, depleted place. The creativity and world-building was still there in spades, this series' trademark brutality is back in force, and holy CRAP, the NightWing queen!!! (I have some concerns re: how they're going to resolve the sensitive issue of war crimes such as 'non-consensual medical experiments.' That's... Not something that should just be brushed under the rug. I hope the author handles it carefully.)

“We need to choose the bravest RainWings for the first wave,” Glory said. “Tsunami, I want you to make a list for me, based on what you’ve noticed during training.”
Tsunami snorted. “A ‘brave’ list might be asking a lot. You can have a ‘less sleepy than the others’ list.”
These two have no business being this funny.
But seriously though, this series just keeps getting better and better. I love how every dragonet has their own personality and voice. Though my absolute favorite is Tsunami, with Clay and Glory falling a bit off behind, I think book 4 did a good job at handling Starflight. I was kinda expecting that plot twist at the end because of how shady the NightWings have been, but it was a nice touch nonetheless.
Oh, and Deathbringer. He’s so snarky and pretentious I love him. I’m not that invested in the romance subplots just yet but him and Glory are the funniest.

Loved it. Might be a tie to my fave WoF book so far, book 2. To me there were no "stagnant" moments in book 2, but for me book 4 in the middle felt a bit slow but understandable. Part of me felt a bit like the "what's gonna happen?"-type mystery trope is getting overused in the series for a bit. In the end it didn't really feel rushed which I appreciated. I love the connection of the NightWings and RainWings between book 3 & 4, and the flow of things are very clear and simple between the books. I also like Starflight's character "development", but I would describe it more as character "realization". I also like how they didn't go with the trope of not telling their crush how they felt or smth similar to that. I really liked Starflight's character overall. Based on the time gap of me reading the 4 books, my opinions of the books now might be different. I might even appreciate Starflight's character more right now than Tsunami's or Glory's. Based on my memory, I appreciate Clay, Starflight and so far Sunny. I think she is one of the best characters in the book. 😊🐉☀️🏜️🦂✨ I also personally think that Ma'am Tui is good at worldbuilding and describing things visually ^^ 👍🏼👍🏼😀
