I just don't think I'm made for Joe Abercrombie stories. Not to say I will not read them, but that I have LOWERED my expectation. I know that they are character driven, with little to no plot. In fact, this book has more plot in it (still not enough for me) than the entire First Law Trilogy

Our main character, Monsa Murcatto...goes on a wild adventure...with many ups and downs (there's a double entendres in there). I liked her, but didn't always agree with her decisions and who she sided with.

The other character of prominence, is the man that is called, Shivers. He's a fighter and a ne'redowell. The longevity of this character is quite astounding, honestly.

I'm truly surprised by the ending of this book. I do wonder what is in store for the characters represented...and the ones we'll meet in the next tale.

Obviously, I will continue with this new series. This world holds a special place in my heart, though I am frustrated by the lack of plot (in most all his stories). The reader is just tugged by the neck...to just follow along...here and there...with no real meaning for any of it...and still, it is enjoyable reading. How can this be?

Przecież to Abercrombie!

Every single character in this book is an awful person and deserves death, so how is it that Joe can have me rooting for people I’d otherwise want nothing to do with in real life?!

Joe has most definitely supplanted himself as an S-Tier author for me and I’ll read anything he puts out. This book took me a good 200 pages to actually start enjoying it and then it just continuously got better and better. The constant back stabbing whether it was political or between mercenaries or “friends” made it impossible to know what was coming next.

The story follows the most famous mercenary Monza. She was betrayed by her employer, thrown off a mountain and left for dead. She somehow survives and will have her vengeance and woe be the person who stands in her path.
