This dragged a little more than the others but I still enjoyed it. Olive, who has newly realized that her friend Jasper has turned into her love interest, wants to know more about how he spends his time, but Jasper is evasive. Olive turns her detecting abilities to following Jasper around town, until she learns that he has left London abruptly to become a guest at Holly Hill Lodge, a luxurious mansion in the country. When Olive tries to follow him there, she is involved in a motor accident and is brought back to Holly Hill to convalesce. She discovers that Jasper and a colleague are at the house to unravel a puzzle involving secret codes, spy work, and the butler. Olive is as engaging as ever but her relationship with Jasper seems a little strained and awkward. Hopefully this will change because I'm still really enjoying the series.

Though Olive Belgrave has an understanding with Jasper Rimington, he still keeps part of his life a secret from her. Brimming with curiosity, Olive follows him to an estate far from town. A mishap with her car leads to Olive being hosted at that very estate. A wayward butler, a cast of unusual house guests, and a festive Christmas party complicate their stay giving the two a chance to work together to solve a mystery.

This book has so many components that I absolutely adore. First and foremost, the author is one of my favourites. Beyond that is the time period - the 1920s were such a showpiece of a decade. Then there is the setting - as an avid Downton Abbey fan, the old country manor tickles my fancy. Finally, I love both the winter season and Christmas, rounding out my wishes for a perfect story.

Murder on a Midnight Clear is a lovely cosy, superb reading for this time of the year.

Favorite of the series thus far! I love the slow and easy development of olive and jasper’s relationship. It was about time to learn more about him. Now the mystery was fantastic and the suspects were all well done and true characters. I love that Sara Rosett pulls from real people and events for some of the background in these historical fiction cozy mysteries. Can’t wait for the next one!
