I'm being generous with this rating. As everyone else has said before the series has been on the decline for awhile now. The ending was quite predictable. I knew where she was headed after I read Deadlocked.
I'm not sure why she's releasing After Dead in October because I don't think anyone is going to care to know what kind of people the twins grow up to be. Ehh

Mm, I thought Sookie would end up with someone else, huh...
I am so disappointed.
I was never a Bill fan. So I was glad she didn’t end up with him. I’m not down for a Luke and Laura love your rapist thing. I was never a Eric fan. Everything with him is a chess game, you can’t have an HEA with someone who is literally plotting every move. Especially one that kept saying I will love you as much as I am capable. What does that even mean?
Alcide was self hating, but that was nothing a little therapy couldn’t have fixed. Quinn was my fav, Sookie annoyed me when she ended that relationship. So his sister was a hot mess, look at all the grief Jason caused her. If anything that should have made Sookie more sympathetic and bonded them together. But no she ends up with Sam. Sort of. She kept saying that she wanted to take it slow, but they had sex, more than once. So what does she mean by slow? They work together and see each other everyday. It just seemed like such an after thought. Like well she hooked up with everyone else, all that’s left is Sam might as well put them together. How romantic. Maybe she’ll still be with Sam by Christmas, maybe not. That is not a HEA, that is a booty call until someone better show’s up.
The plot was crap. The Devil never interacted with Sookie, and he was the catalyst for the book. Copely Caramichael wanting the cluviel dor was just random. He never believed anything his daughter said, or in her power, but when she says a friend has a magical wish granting compact he buys it?
Then is mad a Sookie for using it before he can get his hands on it, to the point that he becomes murderously vengeful? Even though the reason why he contacted the Devil worked out for him. And his bodyguard/chauffeur also wants to kill Sookie. Because he made a deal with a Devil, that had nothing at all to do with Sookie, and it turned out bad. Tyrese wanted a girl to love him, and Copley wanted his business back in power. The cluviel dor was a bonus favor to Copley. Tyrese showing up on Sookie’s door made no sense.
Don’t get me started on Fairy. That damn door was never closed, it was always open enough for someone to slide through. Even in the end. Claude “escaped” and then Niall sends her a letter in the garden? Just say that passage and communication between world’s would be limited. 13 books and a crap ending. Le sigh...

Mediocre ending, a plot that dragged and didn't always make sense, a lack of character growth in relation to the previous books - I'm disappointed that I paid money for this book. Should have bought something else! I used to enjoy this series, but I think the author has let the characters down.
By reading other people's reviews, I can see that many are upset with how Sookie's story concluded. I am not one of those people. We were reintroduced to many of the characters that we fell in love with, and for me that's what I REALLY wanted: A proper goodbye for ALL of the characters, and not just the main ones. The book was set around dire circumstances, yet for me, it was like one big party; being able to read about everyone, one last time. Though, I wanted the story to head in different direction, it makes sense that Charlaine Harris ended Sookie's story the way she did.
**Spoilers Ahead**
After reading many interviews conducted with Charlaine Harris, in hopes to get a glimpse of what was in store for the final chapter of Sookie's story, I pieced it together: It was quite painful to realize who Sookie that Sookie would end up with Sam, not Eric. Luckily for me, I came to grips with this BEFORE I read the book, so I enjoyed it knowing Sookie was probably going to be with Sam, the saner option. Many people says that she should end up with Eric and while he is my favorite character, I agree that they shouldn't be together. When she was with any of the vampires, she was always being beaten up, damaged, or close to death. They also liked to control her, which did not fly with Sookie. I think the relationships with vampires could be construed as domestic violence situations in many cases. The way Charlaine constructed these stories, vampires are ruthless and look out for themselves, while humans are pretty objects to use and Eric is no different. Pam pointed this out in the end, when she told Sookie that just because Eric ensured her saftey from vampires doesn't mean that Eric was being thoughtful, he was showing that he knows how to take care of his "things." Sookie got the happy ending she deserved, and while it wasn't the ending many of us preferred, from an objective standpoint, Sookie got a true happy ending, away from fear and pain.

2.5 to 3 stars. Didn't hate it but didn't love it, either. I thought there were some holes, a few things that didn't make sense, and the HEA didn't seem like an HEA so much as the next at bat.
*shrug* For me the series lost it's luster around Dead & Gone and I've been sticking with it hoping for a return to glory days. I didn't get the ending I would have liked to have seen, but I'm very happy it's over and I can now let it go.

I think this was a fitting end to the series. I had a bad feeling that Sookie would be turned by the end and I just didn't feel like that was the best end for her story. I am ultimately glad that she and Sam are together, but can't believe that the relationship with Eric ended like that. Good call for Pam to become sheriff, though!
I think that, with all of her enemies taken care of in one form or another, everything is good, now. Maybe our Sookie can get a real break now, and live a somewhat normal life, with her boyfriend, and friends, and family instead of getting shot at and threatened every which way!

Sorry this is the last of the Sookie Stackhouse novels. These books were one of my guilty pleasures.
Even though the last few books weren't as good as the first few, I enjoyed this series all the way through. It was a fun romp through an interesting world that I will miss now that I'm done. I completely didn't see who Sookie would end up with, but was pleasantly surprised because it seemed fitting. Thank you, Charlaine Harris, for the fun-filled hours I spent with these books. They were truly a great distraction from the real world.
