What is god? Is god a word for the concept of a purpose, protector and plan, a creator and destroyer, infallible judge, eternally appointed? Is god a striving, without which we’d fail to thrive? Does god exist out there, within, or not at all, and is the merest glimmer of god what we call the sublime? If you find yourself attracted to the amorphous interstices between life, death, and whatever else there is, adult services librarian Katrin Abel recommends that you check out the essay collection Thin Places by debut author Jordan Kisner. Through Kisner’s inquiries into the lacunal, consider whether “all suspended desire, in some sense, feels the same,” experience “late-breaking phantom limb syndrome of the soul,” and “give up and hump your neighbor” when the dance floor gets too crowded. Whether you find yourself in direct communion with the almighty, “obediently talking to the ceiling,” or “playing with fire and holding hands” with yourself alone, enough will be “revealed in the way you wait, and then in the way you leap.”

The eclectic interests of Jordan Kisner are united in their specificity – Texas debutantes modeling Martha Washington, coroners, and Mormon activist mothers to name a few. And while her subject matter may be diverse in topic, her collection Thin Places is unified by a searching intellect and dedication to delving into the broad questions that unite us. How can I find love? How did I come to be here? What will happen after I am gone? Will my life have meaning? I greatly admire her natural curiosity and her openness to sharing uncertainty in her own work. Instead of hiding her brushstrokes, she reveals parts of her process that deepen her own search for meaning and broaden our understanding as a bonus. Of particular note is “Backward Miracle,” which traces the hard work of preparation, only apparent in retrospect, which led Kisner to find a new kind of love.
4.5. A beautiful and eccentric exploration of binaries and liminal spaces. From ones you might expect (sexuality) to ones you might not (does an individual self have boundaries?). It didn't feel revelatory as I read, perhaps due to my reckless speed reading, but I keep coming back to its themes.
Also it dissects Say Yes to the Dress in relation to pageants, colonization, and racial/ gender/ class identity, so what more could you want?
