A 4.5 book, it was nice but like all graphic novels was just missing a small edge in the story. I felt as if something was missing that would have made it a 5. It was really funny and hilarious but at the same time informative, the character development was stellar and personally I loved the female empowerment sprinkled in there. The ending was abrupt and kind of disappointed me, maybe that is what was lacking, which if the ending was better this book would have been a five star. Loved the art style, especially the characters hopping or rather prancing around and getting smacked in the head with pebbles. The story was well developed, from red lantern to the brother disciple point. Mei-Wen’s character arc was amazing as well from village girl to the leader of the sister disciple.

This was by far one of the best graphic novels I've ever read. It made me feel emotion towards the characters. I have to admit, once I finished the book, I ended up hating the main character with a passion.

I liked it, but not as much as I liked Saints. I think reading Boxers before Saints will help you understand what's going on in Saints, because it goes into greater detail about what the Boxer Rebellion actually was. I really like the idea of history being told in the form of a graphic novel. It's been a while since I've read it (over a month), and now I'm finding that I'm having a hard time talking about the book and what I thought about it. It's definitely worth reading, though, and it does make me want to learn more about it. Whether I actually do so remains to be seen, but maybe one day...

It is a good introduction to the subject, though, and I think if you're new to graphic novels (like I am), Boxers (and Saints) is a really good place to start. I also liked seeing the other side of the story, and that there are many sides to one event.

My Rating: 3 stars. Mostly because it's a good introduction to the Boxer Rebellion and the format makes it different. But it also gets 3 stars because I don't remember enough to give it a higher rating.

Like Gene Luen Yang wrote on his website, "in your average American history textbook, the Boxer Rebellion gets about a paragraph"- and that's exactly how much I remember reading about it at school. That being said, when I began the graphic novel I was a bit confused because of the inadequate background information I should have had beforehand. But that didn't hinder my reading experience at all! If anything it really enlightened me to go out on the internet and research the time period and what this rebellion was about after I had finished. Besides not having prior knowledge, I really enjoyed the story and the characters. Even though I wasn't up to speed on my historical facts, I still got the basic gist of what was going on and the tumultuous times China was going through. There are some violent scenes, which I appreciated, and I think this is a great graphic novel to educate both students and adults. The pacing and plot line flowed and there were various unexpected occurrences that caught me off guard- which I liked! Definitely recommend, I will be picking up the second volume!

*http://geneyang.com/boxers-and-pop-culture* great article on author's website on how pop culture influenced the "boxers"

It took me until the very end of this comic to understand the title. It took my husband two seconds. World history was never my strong suit. In fact, I really dislike history and historical fiction. Congratulations Gene Yang!! You have educated me about the Boxer rebellion in a wonderfully told graphic novel!

I know the author did research on the history of the Boxers and after all it's a graphic novel. But it is so different from the Boxers I read in my history textbook... i did enjoy it.

Hmmm. I did not get this book at all. We will be discussing it with a reading group at the high school in January, and I plan to listen hard!

Yang advises reading in different genres and outside one's comfort level: so here I am! I do not like graphic novels, I am not about killing people for beliefs, and in this day and age, "non-news" made up of sexist scare tactics is a sore subject, so rebelling against "the foreign devils" because they drink menstrual blood, fly pubic hair flags and have female yin, AND having our hero burn a library to support that rebellion. . . .maybe not so much.

Am going to read "Saints" and see what else comes up.
