Wickedly clever; keeps you guessing to the end. Different take, as this is not a legal thriller although the main character once was a lawyer and there are other aspects of the criminal justice system in play throughout.
Not sure how I missed this book as I usually read the new Grisham novel on vacation. This one didn't disappoint. Lots of twists and turns. Unfortunately there wasn't any one to "root" for. Everyone is corrupt! Some parts could have stood some more editing but overall I enjoyed the book and didn't want to put it down for the last half.
Ahhhhhh finally Grisham is back. Twisty, turns & crazy plotting- reminiscent of The Firm. Really enjoyed this book- fast read.

This was a perfect book to read at the lake for the beginning of summer. It moved right along, had interesting characters and some plot twists that I didn't expect.
Yes! The old Grisham is back! Excellent, kept me on edge waiting to see what would happen next. 3/4 of the way in I began to suspect but the ride was amazing the whole way through. Welcome back John.
Grisham fails to give us a sufficient reason to enjoy Malcolm Bannister's determined pursuit of the big score; there is no truly sympathetic protagonist, ingenious reveal, complex legal conundrum, or deliciously evil villain to justify the cruelty invoked in the name of money.
At the end of the book there is a note by the author stating that this is not based on a true story and that very little to no research was done when writing the book, and it shows.
I was very much looking forward to reading another John Grisham book. His other ones have been very enjoyable, but this one seemed off from the very beginning. The pacing, the point of view, the writing style, all are different from his previous writings.
I give the book 2 stars because occasionally the brilliance of Mr. Grisham's writing is able to shine through, however it happens much too rarely to make the book an enjoyable read. Mr. Grisham wanted to write a fast-paced, high stakes mystery but this one just seems to fall flat.

I have read every Grisham book and many of them mesh together. This one was a bit different and I really enjoyed it!
