It is totally correct that this book doesn't have a lot of research or substance, but I wasn't reading it for either of those purposes. This book is pure entertaining, so if you are expecting more, I would suggest reading something else.
I think this was a very good story. It's different from a lot of John Grisham's earlier works and other law thrillers. He told the story in first person, which is different and refreshing, and from the perspective of a Black male, which he's never done before. The main character is a brilliantly clever man and very very smart-he kept me on my toes the whole time. I had no idea what he would do next. There wasn't a lot of action like JG's earlier works that have been made into movies, but it was still interesting. And the plot twist just made me smile.
John Grisham you have been disappointing me as of late. The last couple books of yours have been less than stellar. Your earlier books were so much better!!! Pelican Brief, The Client, The Firm, The Street Lawyer!! They were all great!! Couldn't put them down! Loved the characters! This one was a cross between Shawshank Redemption and Oceans 11. And the main character was a two-faced asshole. I didn't like him at all. I really want to read your newest one but I'm nervous about buying it. May have to wait until I can get it from the library.
Malcom Bannister, a sincere lawyer is heartlessly framed by the FBI for a non-existent crime and put away for 10 years. As he nears completion of his fifth year, an opportunity like never before looms on the horizon, for a possible acquittal. From witness protection programmes to warped judges, "The Racketeer" is a speedy train of treachery and triumph! Perils of this read are sweaty palms, racing pulse and a pounding heart! Vintage Grisham!
