John Grisham has a knack for writing thrillers that quicken the pace but don't leave a mark. This book is pure fun.
Not one of my favorite Grisham books. The main character was a total jerk - ok, he was wrongly accused and spent time in prison and became estranged from his wife and kid for only being guilty by association - but the lengths he goes to, throwing morality out the window and stepping on a lot of toes to secure his freedom and slake his greed was over the top. He gets the all-too-willing girl and the gold (literally) without taking any lumps himself - not much of a hero. Mitch McDeere and Jake Brigance, where are y'all when we need you?
This is my first adult Grisham novel for many years, and I did enjoy it. It was very clever, although I felt there were a few holes in the story, and I got a little lost toward the end with all the twists and turns, but it’s probably not a great idea to read John Grisham as a procedural - I think the best way is just to read them and go with the flow!
I used to really enjoy John Grisham back when he initially started out with books like The Firm and A Time to Kill, but I felt like he lost his way at some point and just started writing books to churn them out. So, I stopped reading his books quite a while back.
But, The Racketeer is a book I really enjoyed a lot and I hope it is a sign that John Grisham is going to start writing good stories again.
First, let me see they I actually listed to this book via my Audible.com account. But, with that being said this was a good story about a lawyer who is prison that knows something about a crime that was committed and he uses that information to get out prison. The story only takes off from there with several great twists and turns with an ending that really surprised me.
I recommend this book and the audio book if you happen to have a commute like me.

Ugh.
I have really enjoyed many of John Grisham's books. The Pelican Brief, The Firm, several others...I just couldn't put them down and they were great to read. But this book...why did I waste hours of my life on it???
A quick synopsis. Malcolm Banister is an attorney who is in jail for a crime he didn't commit. Through a very intricate scheme, he sets things up to rectify the situation with a very complex, manipulated and unbelievable scheme. At the end, the reality unfolds and you (kind of) understand why the middle occurred. Completely unbelievable.
I would not recommend this book. Instead, read some of his other books.

A quick read, typical of most Grisham books. A fun story, with good characters, yet the twist has no foreshadowing, which is frustrating.
I didn't finish this book simply because it didn't demand my attention. I read the first half and stopped. No curveball thrown at me would have been unexpected and I would be saving myself a lot of time by putting this down. Not that it was bad, it was just unoriginal.

I know that Grisham isn't High Literature necessarily, but I found this one really entertaining.
Loved the first half, but the second half was very confusing as to why he was doing what he was doing. Eventually explained in the end, but still. . . You think you know somebody, and he does something incomprehensible. Overall good read.
