i thought this would be more about the country girls, rather than just a country girl. i didn’t like baba at all through the story and thought i eventually would. i felt like her mom died really suddenly and it hurts me that she is still at the bottom of the lake, unrecovered. the ending of it was justified, i’m glad it happened and i hope that she learned from it. i may read the rest of the trilogy so hopefully i can find out.
Loved this! Even better as an audiobook narrated by the author herself.

This book was assigned for class but I also watched a documentary about Edna O’Brien by the BBC which is available on YouTube. It was interesting seeing how much of her own life that Edna put into this novel, but truthfully I preferred learning about her to reading this book.
I didn’t like any of the characters much and was particularly irked by Baba especially with how she treated Cait (the note! The NOTE!! That was so so selfish of her). I was relieved at the ending I have to say as I thought it was going somewhere I didn’t want it to, especially knowing how influenced by O’Brien’s life it was. Definitely a much easier read than The Dark but with many of the same themes, just with a little less bleakness and a bit more fun.
I appreciate how groundbreaking it was at the time and it was an enjoyable enough read but I’m unlikely to finish the trilogy. I liked O’Brien’s style though and may have a look at some of her more recent novels.

Revisited in the wake of Edna's death, ahead of taking on the sequels which I'd never got around to. It would be tempting to call the love and hurt she carries from her childhood contradictory if they didn't so often seem two sides of the same coin—a storm of feeling, forever at war within. Fascinating to see how many episodes here resonate and recur through the short stories I've explored in the years since I first read this: her writing is raw and real and, we can but hope, deeply cathartic.
