Clunky writing and an irritatingly disjointed story. I don't mind fore- or back- shadowing but even the continuous bits of the narrative seem to stumble between episodes. Feels like an inexperienced writer who loved LoR and some other swords and sorcery stuff and thought they'd have a go. Maybe better not.

One of my favorite book series.
I would love more YA fantasy that doesn’t involve a love interest. This was great. I loved so much of this journey and the characters our FMC runs into. I love how the book doesn’t pretend she can outmatch muscles she runs into but instead outsmart. It’s a great message to young girls that you can have an interesting life, use your intelligence to get by, and all without it revolving around a girlfriend of boyfriend being the end game. This is just a solid adventure story.
My mom recommended this book and, as usual, she has impeccable taste. :D

Awesome! Great story, very exciting! Similar to Mercedes Lackey Valdemar series, but at the same time it's very different. Fantasy, magic, horses, strong female protagonist, special skill for the Green Riders.
Karigan G'ladheon gets expelled from school, and she is determined to get back to her home city.
Along the way, it seems trouble finds her. She meets F'ryan Coblebay. Unfortunately, F'ryan is dying. He has been shot by two black arrows. He pleads with her to take his message back to the king. His horse is ready to keep moving. Reluctantly she agrees. And so, the adventure begins. She is not safe. She meets trouble around every corner. And this is just book one. I love this series.

Audible: Narrator Ellen Archer (very good performance)

Points for an engaging story, reasonably well-drawn characters, and a whole extra star for realistic flora and fauna (and an excellent horse character!)
Deductions taken for excessive sexual assault, distressing hints of racism, a ponderous taking of itself too seriously, the presence of elves (and over-use of the word “fair”), and disparaging treatment of anti-monarchical sentiments.
I’ll probably read the next ones, but without too high of hopes.
EDIT AND UPDATE: READ THE NEXT BOOK! This was Britain's first book. They get WAY better, and I'm sad it took me this long to read them!

Too young adult for me. I have better books to read.

The general format of the story reminded me greatly of Alice in Wonderland - but if Alice was whisked away by a dead man's horse, instead of lured by a rabbit.
The story felt dense, and the fantastical elements took themselves very seriously - the world building was impressive, and I can genuinely understand why this is the beginning of a fairly long running series. I was really pleased with the pacing, with a large resolve halfway through, the main conflict resolving around 85%, and various points of conflict and character growth throughout. The story also didn't hold punches - fair warning that if you do not like character deaths, do not pick up this book. They drop like flies.
