biiiiig fan of Stevie. what a cutie nerdy little weirdo <3

the writing annoyed me at the beginning, felt like she was trying too hard with the flowery language. if i've said it once, i've said it a million times, not everything needs to be a danged metaphor, people!!! i liked everything else about the writing, though. not sure if i just got used to it, or if she stopped trying to make everything a metaphor, but it def got better as the book went on.

i love a fun little mystery, and this was def that. already picked up the next one!

Great until the ending in the way that I can't believe the ending even counts as an ending.

I'm not a mystery girl, but I figured I'd give this one a try after a recommendation from a coworker — and the season, of course! It was definitely fun, and I enjoyed the mysterious world it set up for sure. The characters were diverse and interesting, and there's a lot going on that I did enjoy. The only reason I'm not continuing the series is because I've heard the ending is disappointing, and I'm not interested in getting into another How I Met Your Mother situation — you know. A fun foray into YA mystery that I don't regret!

I found this book very slow in its pacing and wasn't a fan of the sharp cuts back and forth from the 1930s to the present, I felt that there wasn't enough done in the modern day plot to justify linking it back to the past.

I found the main character Stevie pretty insufferable, which wouldn't have been such an issue if any of the other characters were well-rounded and likeable.

As the book was a quick read and ended on a cliffhanger (and I already downloaded the sequels) I will keep reading, hopefully the pacing and characters evolve from here.

I enjoyed this book reasonably well. It was very slow to pick up and I did manage to predict a good amount of the twists. Nevertheless, I’m excited to see what happens in the rest of the series.

The first thing I will say about this one is that it had really, really weird pacing. The best way to describe it is that it felt like one big set-up for the next book, as nothing was really solved or fully investigated. That being said, I really enjoyed reading this. It had so many of my favourite elements: secret tunnels, an isolated boarding school, hidden spaces, and a cold case. Also, Johnson described what Stevie was thinking and feeling really well, so that she felt like an actual person. I’m looking forward to reading the next book in the series.
