DNF at 17 min into audio book. Uses R word. Could be to make a point but way too many books for me to care and keep going when I know I abhor the word so much.

I really enjoyed reading this book. Having a main character that dealt a lot with body image, addiction and a cultural expectation that I wasn't familiar with was interesting and real. I unfortunately feel like Gabi's struggle with self confidence often left her on the losing end, but I also recognize that this is how we think as human beings. We focus and harp on our flaws, even if no one else thinks that much of them. Overall, an experience I enjoyed partaking in.

Gabi, a true heroine who will stay on my mind for a long, long while. I love this book.

I can see where this book has merit for readers of a certain age, but I am no longer that age.

one of my favorites this year I think. it was really interesting; a combination of poetry, vunrability, and love. it was creative. i expected a novel with these kinds of themes to bring my mood down but it didnt; it was oddly happy with rocks in the road as life is and it had a really good ending. loved it. you should def read it.

Really engaging, at times stunning. Even though Gabi's life is totally different than mine at that age, Quintero still perfectly captures the feelings and concerns of adolescence.

On a writing note, there were times when I found the translation/explanation of Spanish words and phrases a bit heavy-handed -- if this were an adult novel I think I'd prefer everything be untranslated (relying on context only), but for YA, this may be the right choice. (I am not taking issue with the use of Spanish; it adds tremendously to the book!)

This book reminded me so much of growing up and being able to relate to what Gabi when through and having friends who had similar experiences to her friends. Definitely would recommend this book!

Currently rocking and rolling on Gabi's powerful and positive voice, especially as she questions traditional and cultural gender norms and expectations, including how to be a "good girl" and what we mean when we say "boys will be boys". Reminiscent of Jennifer Mathieu's Moxie, in all the best ways.
