Wonderful, hilarious, believable main character who is miraculously a well-written teen of color. Plus strong feminist message without being too preachy! Woah!
Review coming on the blog, but I loved this narrator and all her people. It reminded me of teaching high schoolers. I want to be Mrs. Abernand.
My review honestly sucks guys, but it's up on the blog.

This is my 2nd time through. The voice feels really authentic to me, and I love how all of the different topics are dealt with pretty realisticly.
A coming of age tale told through the journal of a Latinx girl living in LA. I loved seeing the world through Gabi's eyes and the worldbuilding around Latinx-American culture! This book is funny, heartwarming, and a solid addition to the YA space.
I read Gabi, a Girl in Pieces, for Teen Read Week 2017. It was entertaining and honest. It took me right back to high school! I shared a lot of the same qualities with Gabi and I struggled with the same things. I liked Gabi's approach to life. It's a great book for teens, it focuses on issues that important to them, while feeling like it has been written by one of "them." Definitely recommended.
“I SWEAR:
To learn how to put eyeliner on
To be happy in my skin (whatever that means, but it is being said by all those skinny women on TV who don’t have much skin to begin with, and so they don’t have to worry about how much happiness to fit into their skin, but us fat girls have so much more skin we have to claw and scratch happiness from anywhere we can get it so we can stuff it into our skin)
…
I SWEAR
To not make promises I can’t keep.”
(p. 47-48)

...and then you read something that reminds you how GOOD ya can be and you feel bad for dissing it.
Gabi's voice is so unique yet reflective of what all teen girls go through. I loved following her (and her family and friends) as she faces challenges with humor, spirit, and enough junk food to fuel a small army. If you're looking for the best of today's YA, you need to read this book.
**Reread 2/23/18. Oh how I love Gabi. She has so many amazing qualities that she learns to see in herself. Like I said before, all teenage girls (and boys) need to read this book.
Gabi describes herself in many different ways: a fat girl (based on her mother's assessment), a poet, a writer, a girl in pieces. I loved Gabi, and therefore loved this book! Gabi is realistic, brave, honorable, and inspirational. This book describes Gabi's senior year and all that she goes through with a pregnant friend, an openly gay friend, a drug addict for a father, an overprotective aunt, and a traditional mother. All teenage girls need to read this book. We all can connect with Gabi.

This book was a super fun read, isabel quintero does a great job of immersing you in Gabi's world, however I feel the diary entry format stopped me from fully emotionally connecting to the material.
