What I liked:
– The writing style was so lush and rich. I enjoyed the imagery of all of the scenery in the environment.
– the mythology and attention to detail when weaving in elements of Chinese culture and history
What I didn’t like:
- I was kind of disappointed by this book because I came in expecting to really love it. First of all, I wish the author had developed the relationship between Chang’e and Xingyin better, and also developed Chang’e as a character better as well. despite the title implying that Chang’e would have a prominent role, she didn’t really do much except for just be trapped on the moon. I also felt like the relationship between Xingyin and Chang’e was not very well developed
- The love triangle pissed me off lol. I don’t always like love triangles, but I can tolerate them if they are serving a purpose. However, the love triangle in this felt forced and dragged on and Xingyin kept waffling between the two of them. She kept making statements like she was sure she had moved on, only to begin waffling again in the next chapter.
- I also felt like there was potential to develop Wenzhi’s character better, it was interesting to find out that he was actually the demon prince, but they didn’t really take it any further than that. It would have been interesting to see more nuanced and complex character, especially because we learned that the celestial kingdom has its flaws too, and only hates the demon kingdom on principle.
Overall, I would still recommend the story of someone really likes Chinese inspired fantasy novels, but I’m not sure that I would reread it. I’d be interested in giving this authors. Other books a try, but felt kind of medium about this one.

I would give this book 5 star but bruhh I'm so disappointed with the plot, I think I might have love hate relationship with this one. The starting was so promising for me, well I bought it because the cover is so pretty and yea I do judge book by its cover lol + after reading the synopsis, I decided this might be a good read bcs I'm a fan of myth whatever it's malay, chinese or greek, you name it. At first, I was so excited by the relationship between xingyin and liwei, they're so cute together that I felt butterflies in my stomach. UNTIL SUDDENLY THERE IS THIS UNNECESSARY MAN CALLED WENZHI CAME AND WHATTT THE HELLLL THIS IS THE FIRST TIME I EVER WANT THE BOOK TO FINISH ASAP BCS I CAN'T STAND ANY OF THEM, all of the characters is so freaking annoying to me especially xingyin, like girl do be going out with that man while thinking of her ex then be asking herself did what she did rn okay? like BRUHHH. I thought it would be just a passing by, I meant the love triangle but didn't expect that it would be dragged till the end of the story, even to the 2nd book 😭

I do hate wenzhi from the bottom of my heart bcs arghh yes yes xingyin I got it, you like handsome man and yea he's hot, he's good at fighting but HE'S LITERALLY A DEMON PRINCE WHO PLANNED FOR A WAR ARGHHHH, how can she still choose him at the end after knowing how worse he is, like wdym joining the celestial kingdom army, become captain, steal dragons pearl from xingyin, kidnap princess fengmei and all of that just to take his half brother throne as crown prince of demon realm likeeee whattttttt. HE IS ROTTEN FROM THE CORE AND SHE CHOSED HIM!!! I don't want to buy 2nd book bcs wenzhi and xingyin will be the end game lol. Liewei darling, if she doesn't want you I will take you 🥰
Overall, I could say this book literally splits into 3 parts (not like in the novel la I mean from my pov), most of them are just world building and the author literally describes everything and every people conversation so details that it occupied most of the pages here but issokay I love it, I can visualise everything while reading, 2nd part is literally xingyin fighting and doing everything just to save her mother and to give her freedom okay I love that too, and the last part IS THE LOVE TRIANGLE!!! it was so unnecessary to be dragged that far, srsly I don't hate the author I love her writing, just it's quite disappointing how this masterpiece ended 🥹. In my dreams, xingyin and liwei is the endgame. Anyway love the cover, the arts is so beautiful, the world building and thank you for such a good read!
