I enjoyed the first maybe half of this book - but as soon as the love triangle was established I felt Xingyin lost so much agency as a character and they were ALWAYS around and influencing her decisions in a way I wish she didn’t let them. It was truly the two love interests that I couldn’t handle anymore. I was excited for the dragons, but then they tagged along because they couldn’t let her go by herself and I had enough.

I struggled through this book tbh. It has elements of a book I might enjoy but it just didn’t come together.
I think my main problem with it was that I found the FMC to be pretty basic, a bit dense at times but then magically brilliant at others. I just didn’t gel with her and, as the book is written from her POV, I found it less engaging than it could have been.

I waited a long time on the library hold list for this book and it was absolutely worth it. A great adventure, and one I think makes for a great standalone book rather than a series.

This book felt very predictable, but not in a pleasant beach read kind of way. The setup for a lot of the main stuff felt very heavy handed, which I guess might be because it’s fantasy so they have to be building the world? Regardless, I found myself dragging my feet through this read because nothing felt that surprising or interesting
