dnf'd in January because I was going through a lot and wasn't in a reading mood...but I came back to it and I love it! Personally I'm not a fan of love triangles but this one wasn't so bad...had no dog in the fight and the FMC's tendency to fall in love easily annoyed me a bit.
I liked the world building and the author makes it really easy to paint an image of what is going on in your head so that's nice. Overall a very cozy read for people who are into east asian fantasy.

God i loved this. I’m a sucker for a mythology retelling as it is, and I’m less familiar with Chinese mythology, so this was a brand new story for me. The gods and immortals of this realm have a totally different vibe than Greek or Norse gods. These immortals truly feel human, and even though they can heal, etc, their interactions and spirits feel “real”

Then again, that could be due to Tan’s conscientious rendering. I LOVE a story of a strong woman warrior, and this does not disappoint. I loved following Xingyin’s journey. And am also like… girl get with Liwei, his loyalties very obviously lie with you and not his parents

I enjoyed the overall story but it was just too long with jumps in time and convenient plot twists.

This was jam packed with adventure! Loved the fast pacing. It wasn’t often that I felt bored, just during times when Xingyin went on a tangent about her feelings. Some stuff was predictable and also felt like some of the problems got resolved too easily.

The romance bit frustrated me some because she was so oblivious to her feelings as well as those of others but, she was just a teenager… I think? Teens tend to stumble over love a bit more than adults do.

There were themes of family, duty, honor, and identity. I’d also like to add that she HOPEFULLY learned her lesson to not trust so easily and figure out what she’s feeling quicker. One could only hope…

I’m willing to read the second book for some more adventure.

“We should appreciate the flower, regardless of its roots.”

The world building is so lush and detailed! Slow to start for me, but probably because this story was so big that it was like 2 books in 1. This only got more and more interesting as it went on

What a lovely book. A true fairy tale of the finest caliber. It was so human and yet so magical. I would follow Xingyin across the universe and back.
