Spice: 0.5🌶️ (some kissing)
This series is fantastic! There wasn’t as much plot in this one as the first one until the last 10% but that’s because there wasn’t so much character development. Bree and her friends spent the majority of the time on the run while Bree was learning about herself, her history, and how to control her abilities.
I loved learning more about her and her family history throughout the story.
Her and Sel’s relationship is PHENOMENAL!! A true enemies-to-lovers (kinda) since he did literally want to kill her at the beginning. I don’t thoroughly enjoy the dynamic between her, Sel, and Nick. It’s a bit strange and is almost borderline polyamorous which I don’t like. Hopefully that gets fixed in the last book and she just chooses one.
Overall a great book!

I've been reading this one forever because I got really obssesed with Animal Crossing again and haven't picked up my kindle in a couple of weeks however I have now finished this one and I liked it.
I'm still holding out for them being a throuple.
Brianna is kidnapped by the corrupt Regents but she escapes.
They spent a bunch of time in an old plantation that's being protected by their ancestors while they're hiding from the Regents which I loved. And they end up at like a Crossroads Speakeasy where they meet Valec who's a balanced demon/human hybrid that brokers deals for people.
Arthur is actually lowkey evil and he posesses Briana. She's in Arthur's dream world for a bit and she has dragon armour which is really cool.
And then Nick and Sel help her escape being possessed by renouncing Arthur's claim and Sel becomes a proper demon gasp.
Then Bree leaves with the Shadow King who helped her ancestor bind the power to her bloodline so he can teach her how to be better at magic.

GAGGED. ME!!!!! ibsr the order jargon never sticks in my head (like honestly i can barely remember what regents are for) but this is some amazing plot weaving. the way everything always ends up making sense actually leaves me unable to stop reading because i need to understand the entire world. haven’t had this much fun reading something in ages. absolutely beautiful and touching how the enslaved ancestors are such a huge part of this story and it isn’t predictable at all. i read this in a day because it was that interesting. and sorry to nick, but i am team sel until the end.
i didn’t realise this series wasn’t finished yet and now i am so annoyed i have to wait until next year. there’s toooo many characters imma just forget everybody. especially when they start using surnames and round table titles LOOOL bye!! but the millions of characters and plethora of new words are a given in fantasy, which i don’t really like reading. anyway. this is just brilliant i hope so many fantasy loving little black girls are enjoying <3
(one thing though. miss girl couldn’t have ONE black love interest? especially with the subject matter at hand? plss)

Bloodmarked by Tracy Deonn is the second book in The Legendborn Cycle series, and the action starts at the very first chapter! The author brings it all out with her highly bingeable writing style and vivid world-building, which is the best part of this book.
I love that we’re seeing some of the plot threads that were planted in the first book blooming into exciting scenarios in this one. The story has really expanded, and the Legendborns are now just one piece of a highly intricate world. I so love the different kinds of magic introduced into the story, and of course, the deeper themes of how racism and prejudice have played out and created the system all the characters are in.
All the things that made the first book so special in my eyes are still in Bloodmarked; however, there are some issues that I couldn’t get past that prevent me from giving this a solid 5 stars.
One is that I feel Bree is so overpowered. She’s turning into the specialest girl that ever specialed. Maybe it’s all the years I’ve read fanfiction that I’ve become hyperaware when the main characters are being over-the-top favored by the author. This, unfortunately, made me predict the plot twist at the end, and I cringed a little, not gonna lie.
I’m also not that into the love triangle, or maybe just Sel as a love interest. I don’t see the appeal or why Bree’s falling for him — honestly, he’s kind of a jerk most of the time, and the moments of vulnerability don’t make up for or excuse it. Plus, the distrust of Nick, after all he went through, is…weird.
I also need more from the secondary characters, more personality and fleshing out, please!
Overall, this is a great YA Fantasy book that’s better and worse in parts than the first one, but still a highly recommended read.
I’m stalling with picking up Outhbound until the fourth (and hopefully last) book is out!
