AHHHHHHHHHHHHH

Okay.

I loved this. This series has taken up firm residence at the top of my best-of-the-year list. I think this book had a bit of second-book syndrome in that there was a LOT of info thrown at us (but definitely not too much for me) and that I think some of Bree's character development (which was incredible in the last book) was subsumed in favour of setting up some of the plot of the next book.

BUT. This book had me hooked, held fast, bamboozled.

  • Sel still reins supreme. Nick is fine, I guess, if you like a golden retriever type. Me, I don't. Though I did wonder if Deonn is setting up a bond between the three of them. If Sel isn't healed, I will RIOT. Same with Alice.
  • Will was done so dirty in this book. I found myself a bit frustrated with Bree at a few points, for refusing to listen and putting herself/others in more danger, even though I still loved her, and I thought Will provided a great compass for Bree as she begins to navigate this new world
  • As always the discussions of race/mythology/American history were SO peak
  • The pacing was so fast - there was literally never a dull moment. This might have meant that a few moments of character introspection were a bit skated over, but it kept me HOOKED
  • I loved the slow burn between Bree and Sel
  • I loved seeing Bree interact with her ancestors, and I thought the introduction of the Hunter was expertly done for maximum impact. I clocked Erebus as that level of bad instantly (he was a great character. All the villains here were incredible)
  • I thought the severing of her connection to her ancestors was so poignant. She gets to make her own way, now, and discover what's hers. Deonn's note at the end of the book about being the culmination of one's ancestors dreams really brought this home for me
  • Why did she go with Erebus, though?? Does she want him to teach her how to use those powers to destroy him BEFORE he can absorb her powers to retake the Shadow Court? What's her plan, here??

All in all I'm SO glad that I already have the third book with me or else I'd be entering the worst book hangover of the year (though I might just be delaying this until after the third book is done).

OMG. I’m obsessed. Bree is so badass. This series is amazing. I have so much love for the characters and I am always thinking about their journey when summer is distracting me from reading. The Legendborn Cycle is officially top tier for me, Goddess tier, if you will.
