This was long, but very well written. It did certainly feel like a filler book, but there were still a lot of interesting moments and revelations throughout. Not to mention this is the first love triangle I’ve read where I’m kind of hoping for polyamory. There’s clearly a lot of research that goes into this, and it’s all the better for it.

This was quite difficult to rate as I really did want to like it but it just didn't do it for me, so I have gone for 3.5 stars rounded up.
- I found the love drama and love triangle stuff really tiresome, I'm not often engaged by them but this one felt particularly boring.
- I found it really hard to connect to any of the characters. Bree's reaction to everything being instant anger was really hard to relate to, and sometimes a little bit grating.
- the magic was still cool and I enjoyed seeing more rootcraft!
- the exploration of Bree's relationship with her ancestors and their expectations was also interesting. However, the exploration of these really interesting themes and combined with the typical ya love triangles and pining and stuff felt a bit jarring.
- but, again, I couldn't really muster up enough emotion. I'd still recommend it but it just wasn't really for me.

I loved it. I woke up with the baby at 4am one night and suddenly realised he had gone back to sleep a while back and I had been caught up in the action.

I love Bree, and Sel. Alice is a fucking delight.

I really enjoyed the way that Bree was able to come into her own in this book. She struggled with expectations and power, and with her and her friends loves upended, but she went through it with strength. Even when she felt like breaking down. Because having the safe place and knowing when it's okay to have that breakdown is vital.

The road trip through Georgia and the gas station was infuriating. I could see what was going to happen ahead of time and was both annoyed and pitying and proud of William. He wanted to stand up, but he listened to Bree and understood that sometimes, for their safety, they had to let it go. It's abhorrent that that would happen, but unfortunately I know it's still very much a thing.
I agree with Alice though. I'd let those men get eaten by demons.

Very good book. It fell to the classic second book ending but the rest of the book was incredible. I found the racial discourse very interesting and heartfelt, providing important depth to the characters that was imperative to their personalities and how they viewed the world.
