Wasn't expecting much from this book. Was pleasantly surprised.
I'm not much a fan of crime stories but fell in love with the characters, particularly the main character;
Inspector Chopra, an honest man who sticks by his values and adores his wife despite her perceived faults, who reluctantly falls in love with Ganesha his surprise element and whose sense of justice urges him to continue his work after retirement.
The story felt vibrant, sweet and heartwarming and although I was given this book as a gift I am very tempted to seek out the rest!

This book is about a retired inspector in Mumbai who is getting to grips with retirement. What does he do when retired? He investigates the death of a boy and starts a detective agency. I enjoyed this book because it brings the reader along the journey as Inspector (retd) Chopra gets used to modern Mumbai, and the cultural differences with how things used to be and have changed as well as how do you deal with retirement. It is an easy read and a good introduction to the city of Mumbai, India.
"The Unexpected Inheritance of Inspector Chopra" by Vaseem Khan had an unexpected sidekick for the detective; a baby elephant. Inspector Chopra and his elephant discover a diabolical plot in an orphanage of Mumbai. A fun story.
I was really disappointed by the writing in this book. Too much choppy exposition and a lot of narrative threads that went nowhere. An affair by the main character is revealed (in a single sentence) and never mentioned again. The main character and his wife spend more time agonizing about their marriage than actually interacting with each other. OA character is introduced about halfway through and almost immediately revealed to be a traitor, but the reader isn't emotionally invested enough to care. One actually engaging story arc is basically just dropped at the end of the book.
Maybe some of these are just cultural stylistic differences, but I was just engaged in this story.

I enjoyed it for the first chapters, then I got bored and i couldn't finish it...
What an absolute delight of a book. What more could you wish for than a retired policeman turned private detective with a baby elephant for a sidekick. If you like a mystery with little blood and guts but a lot of local colour, enchanting characters and excellent writing then this is definitely for you. Only one complaint is that it really made me want some curry and lots of Cadburys Dairy Milk. You'll have to read it to find out why. I will definitely be buying the next in the series.
Another solid, fun, mystery series. Our guide for this one is a newly retired policeman who is incapable of staying still (although I would be trying to escape the house too if I was him) and his newly acquired, chocolate loving elephant.
For a first novel by the author, it was pretty solid, and I will be returning to see what Inspector Chopra and Ganesha get up to.

This was a nice read, with a good protagonist and the cutest sidekick, baby elephant Ganesha. Who kills a bunch of people. That kind of surprised me, and I would have preferred it if any of the criminals had stayed alive to stand trial, but I guess once an elephant stomps on you there's really no chance of that. At least the corrupt politician is exposed without being killed.
Other than that I liked the setting, and how Inspector Chopra investigates in so many different socio-economic areas of Mumbai. He and that baby elephant really get around.
Overall a good, quick read. I will be checking out the sequels.
