A much-needed palate cleanser. Enjoyable story and characters; completely novel setting (for me), and best of all, a baby elephant.

Eh. This was fine but nothing special. I won‘t continue with the series.
3.5 Stars
A fun cozy with a few hard-boiled crime elements showing through, but the baby elephant sidekick definitely kept the novel in the cozy crime category. I really loved Chopra and his hilariously feisty wife, Poppy. The plot did jump around, but the characters were enough to endear me to continue the series.

I have to warn you if you read this book you will develop an extreme love of baby elephants! I loved the characters, especially Inspector Chopra. And the fact that it's set in Mumbai is a bonus because I've been wanting to expand my reading of different cultures. Can't wait to read the other books in this series.

An endearing couple, an inherited elephant with quite the personality, and a detective who is forced to retire due to a health problem who can’t let go of his passion in life. Full of great characters. Who can resist slightly insecure but so devoted Poppy?
I’ll read more in this series to follow all of the characters, including Ganesha!

A slightly uneven but promising start to a mystery series set in Mumbai featuring Inspector Chopra, who inherits a baby elephant on the same day as his medical retirement from the police force. It felt like Khan wasn't sure whether he wanted to write a cozy mystery or a dark gritty one, so he has elements of each that don't always mesh. The plot meanders at times, getting lost in descriptions while the action flounders. However, the elephant will have me coming back for book two. Hopefully Khan's writing sharpens up as the series progresses. 2.5 stars rounded up.
A great start to the series. Set in Mumbai India, the day police inspector Chopra retires, he inherits an elephant. Chopra has a difficult time letting go of the last case that crossed his desk before he retired. As he pursues leads in the case, he finds himself in some dangerous situations. A light, well paced mystery. Looking forward to reading the next one in the series.
