The setting was interesting and could've turned into a really magical and heart warming story, but it didn't. There was no redeeming quality about Beth. She seemed emotionally unstable and pretty much alternated between being a goodie two shoes to a rebellious teenager to a clingy nutcase throughout the book. All the adults in this book are just mean and controlling. All the teenagers including Beth's friends are mean, bitchy and untrustworthy. Had high hopes for this book but am very disappointed.

"What's your small thing for today?" I ask as I cross the neighbors' lawn to my own. "You."

DO NOT READ THAT BLURB ABOVE.
IMO, it ultimately gives away spoilers and the whole premise of the book. I like to go into the books I am reading blind (and read the blurbs afterwards) so if you are anything like me, take my advice.

Every time Erin Watt puts out a new book it’s like an instant jolt of excitement coursing through me.

Although the conclusion of the Royal series was not my favorite, I was ready to see what they came up with next. And I am here to say that I was highly impressed with One Small Thing.

Guys, this story line has been done before, but I don’t feel like that should matter. It’s much different in other aspects. Erin Watt slayed. I didn’t realize they could write such a compelling YA novel but I am SO here for it.

These two girls have a way of writing that captivates me, story line wise. I get so lost in their story that I feel like I am actually there with these characters. I was with Beth and her parents, at the parties, at school, in Beth’s backyard. I was there for the whole book I couldn’t even put it down. I was too afraid I would miss something, I HAD to keep going. That kind of writing, the kind that gets you hooked from the get go and doesn’t let you go until you are done and you have goosebumps on your skin from reading the last sentence, yeah. THAT is my favorite kind of writing.

The best part of the entire book is the character growth of both Chase and Beth. Yes, BOTH. They both dug through their lives and worked out what needed to be worked out and worked on themselves before they focused on each other. Not only that but they were both exciting and interesting characters to read about. The only thing that could have made this book even an ounce better, was multiple POV’s. One for Beth and one for Chase. Regardless- I was satisfied with the way their story played out.

And y’all know I am all about that high school angst and drama.

One Small Thing is a great story about forgiveness, loss, and finding that hope you’re searching for when it’s so dark in your life you don’t ever think you will find it. This book isn’t just another YA book, this book shows how people can put differences aside, stop being selfish, and accept others for who they truly are, regardless of their past. At the end of the book, the way the title fits into the story lit up my face with the biggest smile. Because it’s true- at the end of the day, we just need that one small thing.

4,5 stars <3

Well this went all in on the first few chapters. It was stressful and intense in the subject matter and I really did enjoy it. I liked Chase a lot. Well written, I felt every feeling each character had.

One Small Thing
may be Erin Watt’s best work yet! Told exclusively from Beth’s point of view, this heart-breaking, forbidden love story isn’t one I will forget anytime soon.

At the opening, Beth is getting ready to start her senior year of high school. Feeling lost since her sister’s death two years earlier and smothered by her overbearing, protective parents, Beth begins acting out: going to parties, drinking to excess, sneaking around behind their backs. Their rules and presence in Beth’s life is smothering, she feels trapped. I hurt for her. She’s dealing with her own grief, and yet her parents aren’t dealing at all. Beth is just trying to find a new normal, one that doesn’t involve living under the shadow of her sister’s ghost.

Then enters Chase. Chase is the new boy in town, who doesn’t know Beth. She can be herself around him, instead of the dead girl’s sister. But Chase comes with his own demons, especially when his role in the night Beth’s sister died is revealed. I ached for him, as does Beth. This boy grew up too soon, and he carries his guilt with him everywhere he goes. But I love the glimpses of the carefree boy he was. He’s an intense character, and the author does a fantastic job of conveying his struggles and grief.

The plot is complex as Beth navigates her feelings for Chase, Chase denies his feelings for her, and literally everyone else bullies Chase to keep him away from Beth. It’s a sad story, one that left me with a heavy heart, but of course I was smiling in the end. Erin Watt’s portrayal of Chase is one I found true to life. People, like the characters in this book, can be prejudice of teens out of juvie. They make assumptions, and anything that happens is blamed on them, just like with Chase. Anything bad that happens in the school, anytime Beth doesn’t feel well or is acting strangely, the blame is laid at Chase’s feet.

In addition to the abuse Chase receives, Watt really does a fantastic job of conveying Beth’s grief and denial of her sister’s death. It’s depicted in detail, the parents’ grief, Beth’s, and how it affects their daily lives. Beth’s growth in this book is believable as she learns to live again.

Overall, One Small Thing pulled at my heart-strings. I didn’t want it to end! This is a sweeter story than most of Watt’s work, but I enjoyed it all the same. I highly recommend it to anyone that enjoys sweet, contemporary romance or to anyone that’s enjoyed Watt’s previous books.

I really enjoyed this book. It was such a quick read for me I actually finished it in less than 24 hours. In a sense I can understand Beth’s feeling of being trapped as a teen. It has been a while since I’ve read a YA but I really enjoyed this one. She made some mistakes she couldn’t understand some signals correctly, she acted out. But that’s all very understandable being young and feeling trapped and not feeling in control of your own life. When you feel like you can’t breath without being told to it can make you do some silly things. This book really has you gripping your seat at some points just wondering what’s going to happen next. I never read a book by Erin Watt before but I am very excited to read more by her. In a place and time where she feels trapped she found solace in the least expected place. She found what she wanted to do with her life when she didn’t know what she would be doing after college, some people know that their whole lives, some people know it for a few years. But she figured it out and she fought to make sure it happened. The best part of this is the happy ending. To Iowa!

I received an e-ARC from Netgalley in exchange for my honest review.

Its official - Erin Watts has become an auto-buy author for me. I was hooked from the minute I picked up 'One Small Thing'.
This book is not light and fluffy. It deals with some pretty heavy topics, but it is done oh so well.

Beth is feeling suffocated by over bearing, protective parents. Beth lost her younger sister in an accident three years earlier, and her parents haven't coped well with their grief. To cope she sneaks out to a party in a nearby neighbourhood, and meets Chase - a gorgeous, deep and brooding young man. She feels an instant attraction to him.

After the party Beth never expects to see Chase again, but on the first day of school, there he is... But this is where things become complicated - it turns out Chase was involved in Beth's sisters accident. Beth should hate him (everyone else does)... So why can't she get him out of her mind.

This book had it all - tear jerking moments, complex characters, and interesting story, and a beautiful romance.

I highly recommend you read this.... Oh, and anything else Erin Watt has ever written.
