"one small thing" is a YA novel that can expand across ages. I don't like to recap the story in a review so I will just tell you that this is a highly readable tale of Beth and her path of readjustment after her sister's death. I read it quickly and was surprised at how much I felt similar emotions to the character---this is a testament to the author because I am certainly well beyond the character's age.

Unfortunately this book wasn’t very good in my opinion. Most of the characters were annoying, rude, and just overall infuriating. I kept hoping it’d get better, but it didn’t.
Hmmm.

Erin Watt is masterful at creating stories that encapture the pain of reality and the truth of the situation. In this book, she strikes gold again as she takes the seemingly bad guy Chase and turns him into a person with good again. Chase may have been the guy who ran over Rachel, but is he really the one who killed her? The question is asked and answered in a way that humanizes everyone and provides forgiveness where none was possible before.

Die Story beginnt damit, dass die Protagonistin Beth auf einer Party einen attraktiven Fremden namens Chase kennen lernt und in ihrem Wunsch zu rebellieren kurzerhand mit ihm schläft. Kurze Zeit später stellt sich heraus, dass dieser Fremde der Junge war, der vor drei Jahren Beths Schwester Rachel überfahren hat. Ihre Gefühle für ihn kann sie nicht abstellen und da niemand nachvollziehen kann, warum sie den Mörder ihrer Schwester nicht aus tiefster Seele hasst, muss sie sich mit einer Menge Drama herumschlagen.
Die Autorinnen haben sich mit diesem Buch ein sehr schwieriges Thema ausgesucht und sind meiner Meinung nach leider daran gescheitert.
Im ganzen Buch passiert einfach nicht besonders viel. Es wird seitenweise auf dem gleichen Problem herumgekaut, daraus entsteht ein ständiges Hin und Her und irgendwie tritt die gesamte Handlung somit auf der Stelle. Ich war wirklich negativ überrascht, zumal ich ein großer Fan der Paper Princess-Reihe war und auch die Bücher von Elle Kennedy (eine der beiden Autorinnen hinter Erin Watt) für gewöhnlich absolut liebe. Der Schreibstil in "One Small Thing" liest sich hingegen wie semi-gute 08/15 Fanfiction.
Die Protagonistin und den offensichtlichen Konflikt, der ihr innewohnen soll, halte ich auch für ziemlich misslungen. In den ersten drei Vierteln des Buches könnte man meinen der Tod ihrer Schwester sei ihr völlig egal. Sie wirkt zeitweise ziemlich kindisch, manchmal sogar etwas dümmlich, und hängt sich die ganze Zeit über wie eine Klette an Chase.
Während sich das Buch in die Länge gezogen hat, erschien mir das Ende hingegen ziemlich gehetzt und von allen Charakteren, die im Laufe der Handlung aufgetreten sind -- seien es Haupt- oder Nebencharaktere -- konnte ich zum Schluss vielleicht noch zwei leiden.
Definitiv nicht die beste Arbeit von Erin Watt -- weder auf Schreibstil noch auf Story oder Charaktere bezogen.

I definitely read this book at the right time. The message of focusing on every small thing that makes you happy instead of on the bad things in your life, was beautiful and very true.
