Definitely started a little slow, and took me a second to get used to the atmosphere, but now I want to bathe in it! This world is so lush and I can’t wait to see how it expands.

Jacks had me by the throat as soon as he called her “pet”.

The best-written corny YA story I have ever read. It knows it is corny and leans into it.
Realistic characters, VERY soft magic system

Hmmm 3.5.

Preface here: I did not read the Caraval series before reading OUABH. HOWEVER, I had no problems getting into the world or understandings Jacks/ the Fate.

I almost enjoyed the first half of the book better than the second? Pace was quick, location was cute, and I enjoyed seeing snippits of characters (and could sense we were building up to something more perhaps!!). For some reason, the second half of the book kind of lost me a bit...

More explained below...

Spoiler

When shit starts to hit the fan, and Eva is on the run post-Apollo bye-bye, I couldn't help but feel like the plot was somewhat lost? I was waiting around to see if something big would go down, and it felt like the BIG plot filler before the ultimate climax of the book was the Vampire night? Eva was infuriatingly naïve; I know her whole schtick is to believe in true love, believe in the fairy tales like her parents told her, yadda yadda yadda, but dear god! The first half of the book, I was not bothered by Eva holding tightly onto these beliefs, but by the fifth "Marisol couldn't POSSIBLY do this" I wanted to shout "Girl you deserve all the bad things coming your way at this point!!"

The ending was lit, but again - Eva PLEASE why aren't you smacking down on Marisol. SO frustrating.

I am definitely interested in Jacks. (Mostly I just love the enemies to lovers trope). Plot place + building romance is what boosts my rating to 3.5.
