I only recently came across this author. I enjoyed Until you very much so I added some more books to my TBR, this one was one them. It sounded like a sweet story, performed by two of my favorite narrators.

And it was. Sweet I mean. I like dorky, nerdy characters and because we are a neurodivergent family my heart goes out a little bit extra for MCs that struggle with social codes and perceive the world differently.

So I loved Andy and his awkward ways (and his hilarious monologues and comments) and I also loved sweet and caring Law who not only accepted Andy but also appreciated him. I thought they worked well together, even if their friends with benefits thing started a bit awkwardly.

"I have heard of alien hand syndrome but right about now it seems like I have a good case for alien mouth syndrome."

I have also never before heard that if you swallow your chewing gum your poop will bounce out of the toilet.

Of course, the whole story was really predictable but that was also what I expected it to be. If you like surprising twists and turns this book is not for you.

I didn't like this book as much as I liked Until you but I still liked it well enough. I would have enjoyed it even more if it hadn't been for the "we make a lot secret of assumptions instead of actually talking about things-trope". That is a bit of my pet peeve. I wanted to tell them to use their words so, so many times. 🤪

like i always say: we need more makeover gay romances. law falling in love with andy before and after the transformation just so satisfying. andy taking it as an oppotunity to just be a better version of his true self and not a complete change. this was so good. briar prescott just gets me. she has written so many books and all of the ones i have read i have enjoyed. they were all different from each other too which is an amazing feat. intimacy and sex with her is always different and always amazing to read. characters are always well developed. loved it.

"You’re a good person, Andy Carter, and as far as I’m concerned, that makes you a hero in my book.”

Andy and Law are an unlikely pairing. Andy is used to being relegated to the sidekick, but he’s in search of some big hero energy to try and get his best friend to notice him. Law needs someone to tutor his hockey team, and Andy comes highly recommended but is hesitant to help. Until Law agrees to help him land his crush in exchange for helping his team pass the class. The only problem is that the more time Law spends around Andy, the more he sees the great guy that lies beneath the awkwardness. And he finds himself hoping that somehow Andy will pick him instead of the guy he’s had his sights on for years.

I thought this was a cute story. Andy and Law were really fun together. There was plenty of the signature Briar Prescott banter to enjoy throughout. Andy was adorably awkward, I loved his ramblings and some of the crazy things that came out of his mouth. And I loved how thoroughly charmed Law was by it all. The slow and easy way their friendship formed was so sweet. And it was clear that they were the ones meant to be together.

There were a few times I wanted to shake Andy as he continued to push the narrative that he wanted to date Falcon and didn’t realize that Law was completely smitten with him. But I enjoyed how it all shook out in the end, and the glimpse into the future we got in the last chapter was perfect!

He doesn’t make me feel like I’m a hero either, but the thing is, with Law, I don’t really care about being a hero at all. With Law, I’m just me. Just Andy. And with Law, it’s enough.

Very cute!

Andy is a near-genius physics nerd who one day realizes that he’s in love with his hot best friend, Falcon.  He also realizes that he has no chance of winning Falcon over because as he puts it, â€śI’m the sidekick, never the hero.”  He then decides to take on a self-improvement project to reinvent himself that he calls “Project Hero,” with the ultimate goal being to win Falcon’s heart.

In the meantime, he meets Law, a gorgeous former hockey jock/now hockey coach who approaches Andy with a proposal:  all Andy needs to do is tutor a few of Law’s fellow hockey players in Physics to help them pass their exams so they don’t get cut from the team.  Given that public speaking terrifies Andy, he initially declines, but Law is persistent.  Eventually, Andy acquiesces, but rather than accept money, Andy convinces Law to give him a makeover of sorts and help him turn into “the hero” and render him worthy of Falcon’s attention.  Thus begins “Project Hero.”  This also sets the stage for Andy and Law to fall for each other.

What a fun read this book turned out to be!  I loved both Law and Andy — they were sweet, endearing, and extremely likable fellows and were so good together (though initially, they don’t realize it).  There were excellent banter and snark between our two characters which was a joy to read and I loved how comfortable they were in each other’s presence.  I also enjoyed how they continuously learned from each other as the story progressed.

I have to admit that I’m kind of a sucker for jock/nerd trope and this one did not disappoint.  There were so many laugh-out-loud moments in this book as well as tender scenes that brought the occasional tear to my eye.  What was refreshing in this story is that the book didn’t revolve around the cliched closeted-jock who refused to come out.  In this story, both our guys are out and proud from the beginning.

All and all, Project Hero is an adorable new adult friends-to-lovers romance.  It was exactly the uplifting, low-angst story that I was looking for.  This quirky, heartwarming romance encompasses everything I love about the genre: it’s hot and steamy, funny, charming, emotional, slow-burning, and inspiring, with a lovely feel-good ending.

Andy and Law are real, complicated, human characters, and I was completely invested in their happiness and rooted for their HEA.  With perfect pacing and a toe-curlingly good queer romance, Project Hero is sure to satisfy.

A huge thank you to BookSirens for providing me with an ARC of this story.
