A really, really good romance novel with a gorgeous, super-cool love interest and Hollywood shenanigans, which also puts you through a personal journey about dealing with terrible loss and fear. I absolutely loved the writing style here: in many ways this novel felt closer to literary fiction, combined with all the classic romance plot beats. And despite a bunch of dark subject matter throughout, it was a delight to read.

The protagonist’s life is brimming with specific details—her dog, her migraines, her LA neighborhood, the TV show she watches to fall asleep, the silly jokes and personalities of her co-workers, the short stories she writes (her true passion), what she likes to cook and eat—and these create such a rich texture of the world and of her experiences in it. On top of this strong, very real-feeling foundation, we then get a beautiful and steamy romance that felt both like a whirlwind dream and super down to earth.

Throughout, there's also a mediation on the issue of closeting in the entertainment industry. I found this to be careful and serious but also fun, complete with fictionalized gossip-blog entries and blacked-out names implying the presence of closeted A-listers who cannot be mentioned.

I HATEDDDDD how this was written, which felt charmless and plodding. I didn't finish this either, I'll admit it, and I know it was SO OBVIOUS Ali was meant to work through her anxiety and all her issues but Jesus Christ on a fucking bike would she ever cop herself on.

madness. so annoying. terrible references.

DID NOT FINISH: 50%

A migraine sufferer who’s never tried the most basic things for migraine? k

Jokes aside, the narration needed a little less detail or to be in first person. This would be PERFECT for multiple POVs but instead, I’m putting it down.
