Wallander is a frequent bungler, but never before has he been this imperfect. The story is excruciating, like a long ride on a tall roller coaster.

I did like this book but it really seemed to drag
A contrived mystery. Sometimes entertaining but in the end not very satisfying.
This is the second to last Wallander, and I thought it wrapped up too quickly, like the previous one. Still a good story, but not enough substance at the end.
The spare style of this Swedish novel in translation isn't usually my cup of tea. So I was surprised at how the tension built through the use of this Nordic Hemingwayesque style. I thought it very effective in conveying the psychological profile of the protagonist, lonely, neurotic homicide detective Wallander. He's a kind of policeman you'll never find in an American novel.
There's no mystery about who's the bad guy; we are introduced to the master criminal in the opening of the book. The question is, will Wallander figure out the puzzle in time? The tension builds slowly, to a very intense climactic chapter.
Written in 1998, the book shows its age in the dated sort of cybercrime the bad guys are trying to pull off. Still, plot and character work together to create an absorbing detective thriller.

Intelligent Swedish murder mystery perfect for my plane ride.
This is my 2nd Mankell mystery, and each one included one part that made me want to shout - No! The protagonist wouldn't do that! Overall gripping.

Another good one - I had to read this one so I can watch the BBC series, which are in a different order. The first season includes this one. Am curious to see how the characters evolve in the series, with the order so different.

Murders, mostly gruesome, pile up. Are they related? Will they uncover the epic conspiracy in time?
Meanwhile, will Wallander resolve, or at least get further on his inner torments, with his path, his relationships, his place in the changing world? Well, its really the latter that make the Wallander series. On to the next!
