Well that was fun! Action packed and intense. Another future I wouldn't want to see for my children.

One of my favourite books from years ago, I’m about to revisit it. It’s the beginning to a great series of story’s and my first introduction to Brandon Sanderson.
Really enjoyed this book. Sanderson took two themes that are really big right now in YA fiction (dystopia & Super Heroes) and crafted a compelling story. I really enjoy his Adult novels and this one felt like the target audience was younger than his normal. I'd put it between Rithmatist and Mystborn. I really like how Sanderson eliminates profanity by inventing emotionally charged words that fit the book. Some of the situations were a little more mature than I thought fit the target audience. For example a female character tries to distract a villain with revealing clothes and suggestive actions including passionate kissing. The action was gripping, tense, and really where Sanderson shines. That and his characters, I really cared what happened to them amidst their peril, he does that really well also. A lot of the story revolves around super heroes, their powers/weaknesses, and really cool weapons. As a result it has less appeal to the female audience. While there is a love interest element it may not be enough to keep the female audience interested, my wife made sure I put that part in there.
Really good fantasy adventure, it's YA but didn't bother me one bit. The story has great buildups, good action, nice twists too here and there. A bit predictable sometimes , but not enough to lose a 5th star over in my appreciation.

I liked the pacing and concept of this book - I really enjoy getting to learn about Sanderson's worlds. It's a very conceptually interesting concept, came at from an angle that I don't often see sudden superheros come from. Definitely a good read, and I'm excited for the next book!
I've read other books by Brandon Sanderson and he is one of my favourite authors so I was worried this book would ruin my thoughts on him because the description wasn't that good. But this book did not let me down whatsoever!! I loved the characters, the story line, the plot twists and just the whole book in general really. I can't wait to read the next book!
3.5 Brandon Sanderson stars, still better than most books but my least favorite from him.
I love the idea of this book, and fully intend to read Firefight when it's released, but I had some major problems.
I HATE how gimmicks were seemingly used as character development. David, the main character, is terrible with metaphors. This seems to seriously be the most important trait about him. Or, at least, that's easily deduced considering how frequently the trait is brought up.
Cody is of Scottish heritage and eager to show it off with lame word choices. That's apparently as 3-d as he gets.
Tia drinks a lot of soda. Wow.
Megan, though slightly more fleshed out, is for most of the book only really characterized as bitchy and her tits look good in a t-shirt.
Were it not for the fun/comic like battle scenes, my rating would be far lower.
Still, though, I enjoy a good comic, and that seems to be what this book is, just without the pictures.

I tore through this book very quickly. Great story, interesting characters, fun gadgets, exciting action sequences. At times, I found some of the back stories a bit one-dimensional, as well as the love interest... but to be honest- I really didn't care. This book was a great read that went by far too quickly. Now on to book 2!
A little too comic book-y for me. In defense of Sanderson, any magic powers are usually a non-starter for me. If you're into this kind of thing, you'll probably like it loads more than I did. Halfway through I was actually leaning towards 1 or 2 stars, but there were some plot developments that actually kept me interested and enjoying the story. Whether I read the sequels is TBD.
