4.01 AVERAGE

LOVED IT! Love all of his books. Brandon Sanderson has a way of writing that makes you feel like you are watching an awesome action movie. More unique awesome powers (he's a master at that), great characters and interesting story line. Can't wait for the sequels.

4.2/5

Such cool concepts. Such amazing writing. I'm convinced Brandon can write anything. Even in the YA genre he manages to build up the story and "plottwists" in such a way you feel like you should've been able to figure it out yourself, but you didn't, even though you tried. Perfect.

Why is everything Sanderson writes so good?

This was hilarious! David's metaphors were fantastically terrible. And I loved it.

One of my favorite things about this is that even though it's YA the characters are all different ages and it's so refreshing!

Love Sanderson so much! Definitely going to be reading the rest of the series soon!

It feels strange to give a book by Brandon Sanderson such a low rating, but I can't help but do so in this case. I just have very mixed feelings about this book. Yes, it was action-packed, fast-paced, plot driven. I read it in a day, couldn't put it down, etc etc. And yet -- I found myself more often than not frowning, as I found that the world building was exceptionally shoddy, especially in comparison to Sanderson's other works. Moreover, far too many parts of the book felt like afterthoughts. A character's bewildering behaviour - the explanation(s) for this an afterthought, unwilling to go back and change things to smooth out awkward moments in the writing, plot, and pace. It just felt a bit clunky.

Also, I couldn't help but think that this book was leaning too heavily on tropes and plot points that are eerily similar to those of Mistborn. Not that it's not Sanderson's thing to set up a great, all-powerful being and a small group of people against them, but it felt as if I were reading a pale imitation of the same story, lacking its complexity and characters. A Mistborn "lite," as it were. I should, perhaps, mention that I did enjoy his twist on the classic comic book - as a reader of comic books, that was great. As often as the superhero genre is challenged, it isn't challenged enough - so this is a nice contribution to that.

What can I say? After glowing reviews from a lot of authors I admire, let alone the very fact that I've thoroughly enjoyed other work by Sanderson, this book was a disappointment. It would have 2/5 stars were it not for the fact that I did, indeed, continue to read it anyways.

The Steelheart Prologue is one of the best starts to a book I've ever read (think jaw-dropping awe in the first chapter of [b:The Way of Kings|7235533|The Way of Kings (The Stormlight Archive, #1)|Brandon Sanderson|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1659905828l/7235533._SY75_.jpg|8134945]).

Sanderson is a master in the same way that Scorsese is a master. You just read (or watch) everything and are blown away every time by the consistent execution of stellar work.

This was meant as a palette cleanser before [b:Light Bringer|29227774|Light Bringer (Red Rising Saga, #6)|Pierce Brown|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1667655583l/29227774._SY75_.jpg|49466217] comes out in a couple weeks, but now I'm going to squeeze in the full Reckoners series before I get blown away by a space opera

sanderson can do no wrong. unique story - shares some parallels with other YA and fantasy novels, but altogether refreshingly new and different. you don't read about superheroes too much and he has interesting ideas about how they work and the world they exist in.

LOVED this book--fast-paced, clever and original, this novel tells the story of David Charleston, who, upon witnessing the tragic death of his father by an Epic, vows revenge. When Calamity appears in the sky, people begin changing into beings with amazing powers. These people, called Epics, wreak havoc upon Earth's cities until one Epic, Steelheart, comes to dominate them all--he cannot be killed, can galvanize energy from his palms, and can fly. Taking the city of Chicago as his headquarters, he uses other Epics to support his dictatorship. Flash forward 10 years, to Newcago, where David and the rest of the city's population, has survived in darkness. David's desire to kill Steelheart has not lessened and his dream comes true when he joins a secret rebel group called the Reckoners, who destroy lesser Epics in hopes of taking away some power from Steelheart. Awesome twists and turns and believable characters made this book a winner for me. I predict great things from this series!
