Yikes. Powerful example of using fiction to explore a topic that feels unimaginable. How did Orwell conceive of it? Complete with its own language even. What would Orwell have written if he hadn't died a year after writing this?

Truly one of the best books I've ever read. Every word feels like it was extremely thought out, and I feel like I can talk about every sentence for hours - or indefinitely. I've highlighted so many sentences and parts of the book, and I genuinely feel like I can't pick a favorite one.

While reading, I completely emphasized with characters - experiencing sadness, anger, concern for them, but most importantly, in my mind, dread. I had a feeling from the start and throughout the book that it wouldn't have a so-called happy ending, but I was still extremely invested. The dread and downright fear I felt - one that is bone deep, and still do, while reading or thinking about the book is almost unexplainable. At certain points, I felt like I was struggling to breathe while my jaw clenched painfully hard.

There is really nothing I can say that no one else has said about this book... I'm glad that this novel is a classic, and I'm grateful that I've read it. It will have a long-lasting impact on me. The only thing that I regret is that I hadn't read it sooner. I just hope, desperately hope, that we won't experience a reality similar to this. But what makes me even more terrified, is that the signs are showing already. I want to crawl into a hole and never come out of it.

Winston Smith, a party worker living in Oceania (a totalitarian regime that comprises of the British isles and the US) begins questioning the ideologies of the government. The book is his struggles with concepts of socialism, totalitarianism, dictatorship, loss of agency and loss of free will. It's slow, brutal and painful to read when we juxtapose that this is slowly the world we are becoming.

Ok so I did really enjoy the book, the pacing was perfect and made for a lovely read (not difficult).
HOWEVER, the big speeches about society felt very repetitive and there impact fell flat, the commentary about the society that characters would give felt very obvious? And generic? I get that that’s kind of the point but I wish that it focused on Winston’s mental state more (I really enjoyed those parts).
Also, the
relationship with Julia
felt quite gross? Like he is sooo much older than her and it felt unnecessary to make her this temptress type character. Like it would have been okish if he needed to be swayed or convinced to fight the system but
he has strong feelings of rebellion from the first chapter.

TLDR:
Great book, great pacing but didn’t like the relationship with Julia and the majority of ‘epic’ speeches of realisation about their society.

I didn’t really like this book to be honest, and I felt like I resonated and understood some of Orwells other works better.
