It's intended purpose appears to be a criticism of a communist, totalitarian police state. Ironically, now, it seems just as responsive and relevant to Western capitalistic structures. In the story, "The Book" shows another way to view current events.

1984 started off very well. I loved George Orwell's writing, I was loving his descriptions, and the story was keeping me at the edge of my seat. I am someone who loves dystopian novels, so that I was loving this was not a surprise. This was true for most of the book but I wish Orwell had kept the momentum of the story up. Instead he decided to take a turn towards the end of the book and insert one of his essays. Yes, the essay was related  but it was definitely not as interesting. I found myself reading but not really understanding. Maybe I am just not smart enough for Orwell, or maybe I just stopped caring. Either way, after the essay was over, I had trouble getting back into the story. Orwell took the plot into a dark hole and I felt that the last part of the book was not as strong as the beginning. If Orwell had kept the momentum going, I feel I would have given this a higher rating. Overall I did not dislike 1984, but I want to read more into what exactly Orwell was trying to say by his ending aside from the obvious.

This review is specifically for the Audible adaptation of the novel, starring Andrew Garfield, Cynthia Erivo, and Andrew Scott.

I'd like to start by saying that the performances in this audiobook were fantastic, which is of course to be expected for such a stacked cast.

That being said, I don't think this should be your first approach to the novel if you haven't yet read it. This is a highly summarized and abridged version, and without the world building, and the character's internal monologue there is a lot you could miss.

I will say that I hated the character of Winston in the original novel, due to his highly misogynistic views. I understand that it makes sense internally in the novel, with Winston growing up in a highly authoritarian state, but I'm glad they cut a lot of it back in the novel.

This is, of course, a classic in the dystopian genre, having shown the highly detrimental effects of a totalitarian surveillance state on its people, the modification of language, the creation of propaganda, the indoctrination of children, and the erasure of history. All of these are kept in this adaptation, so I think if you read this before, you'll love it!

“1984 is the expression of a mood, and it is a warning.”

Read it just read it …

Maybe I should move to the woods away from everything, but they’ll be able to find me there as well.

Exactly as depressing as advertised.
