Might read later. The ways the characters spoke and word choice a little too formal for my liking. The complicated introduction of multiple characters in first chapter was also off-putting, and the "meet cute" between the hero/heroine felt mundane, with little potential for intrigue.

I mean, I guess you don't read these because you're looking for scintillating groundbreaking storylines. But this series is getting rather tiresome. I have only myself to blame.

Very glad the confrontation with the villain was not drawn out. Another great read in The Lonely Lords series. I really like how the author describes physical closeness between characters. She gives great hug.

Ethan Grey is the bastard son of an Earl, who was brought into the Earl’s family and raised with his half-brothers, only to be banished for actions misconstrued by others. He’s just been reconciled with them, only to have his father die and his half-siblings tip-toeing around. Then again, it’s not like he’s the most personable and charismatic person…

Which he’s told, frequently, by his sons’ new governess. Alice has no compunctions with telling her new employer whatever she sees fit to, however she sees fit to – though usually it’s done rather diplomatically… I liked Alice. She’s strong, but quiet instead of sassy and snarky. She has baggage, of course, but that’s par for the course, and in this case is balanced by Ethan’s luggage train…

I enjoy Grace Burrowes’ writing – her stories are romantic, her heroes and heroines definitely deserve to find happiness, and there’s always a cast of supporting characters who’ll show up in each book. This one’s for a slow, lazy afternoon.

I liked this much better than Nicholas' story.

Ethan is Nicholas' illegitimate brother, once close they now barely talk. On his first visit to see Nicholas in years Ethan is reprimanded by a friend's governess. Over the short visit Ethan comes to realise that the governess, Alice, is a breath of fresh air and just what he needs for his two motherless sons.

Ethan has secrets, lots of secrets, its like three books worth of secrets all rolled into one. He even kept his marriage and children a secret from his family. As a consequence of his past Ethan has withdrawn into himself and put all his energy into his business. But Alice intends to change all that.

I liked Ethan, I understood why he would feel so much shame about his secrets and how they influenced his behaviour. I also liked Alice, although her secrets were quite frankly less clearly understood - I get the impression that her secrets may be better explained in a later book, perhaps about one of her brothers or sister.

Still struggling to remember which lord is which from previous books - and the wives are even harder to distinguish.

I liked this maybe more than I should have. The narrative was a bit all over the place at times, but I liked the characters and thought they behaved as reasonable adults for the most part. In addition, their traumatic secrets were truly traumatic, and it made sense - especially at that time - that they would hold on to those secrets and let them fester. I also liked that Ethan was not a rake. I have nothing against a good old fashioned historical romance rake, but the man he was seemed very true to what he’d experienced.

I dropped off on reading this for a good almost-three months because I felt like it was super slow going, but when I picked it back up again, I breezed right through. Sometimes you're just not in the mood for a book until you are.

I really liked this gentle book, where the affection and love between the characters really feel earned and methodical. This is also a book where I felt that there was a good balance of high-drama and low-stakes, and the crazier bits didn't feel too overdramatic or unnecessary. That's a pretty impressive balance to strike.

Also, I've never read Grace Burrowes before and I assumed that this would be pretty low heat, but it's not — it's certainly not graphic, but everything is super sensual and lovely.
