Definitely more thorough than the movie

I loved this book for some peculiar (hehe) reasons. And the fact that these photograph are all authentic makes it way better

When tragedy strikes Jacob, he is motivated to visit the small island in Wales where his grandfather grew up during the war alongside other children. Once Jacob and his father arrive on the island, he immediately explores the abandoned children’s home. As he unravels the mysteries surrounding the home, he realizes his grandfather’s stories were true.

The book is a combination of mystery, adventure, and thriller, which makes the story line intriguing and unique. Throughout the story, creepy and real black and white pictures are incorporated that help set the mood. Unlike some books where every twist and turn can be predicted, this book is not predictable, and I wanted to keep reading until I knew the truth about the island. The characters are well-developed and each child has a certain peculiarity that makes them unique (creates fire, levitates, invisibility, etc). The book had a good ending and I am looking forward to finishing the series.

Extremely clever and realistic. It's spooky, hard-hitting, and it really makes you think. The photos add an extra bit of authenticity. I honestly wish this was a stand-alone book, it was so well-written. However, I get why it's a series now since it's such a complex world. I can't recommend this book enough. (Although, the movie wasn't all that great.)
adventurous mysterious

It took a really long time to get anywhere and once it did it was really disappointing. I had higher expectations for this book.

i quite liked this book, but i didn't love it just because i found it to be mainly lots of world building in 2/3 of it.

Wow - this was so atmospheric and original!
Not quite five stars for me because I thought the romance was a bit unnecessary and I had a bit of a struggle to finish it.

4 Stars (reread #2)

Loved. so poignant and sweet, with a few thrills. After so many mixed reviews; I cleared my mind of any preconceived notions of what this book 'is about' and just read. So many of us can relate to the tall tales our parents, grandparents and or aunts and uncles, tell us. We also can relate to the time in our lives when those stories no longer held power over our imaginations. How sad.

Jacob listened to his grandfathers stories until he no longer believed. A chance encounter brings disbelief to reality. Now, feeling as if his life has meaning, Jacob starts to really live.

I still have an overactive imagination, but no where near what I had as a child. I was considered a dreamer... even by my teachers. I wonder.

(No change in rating, since the first time I read this. It is still a great book)

Loved it. The perfect mix of mystery, creepy weirdness, adventure and fantasy. And it has pictures to boot!
