DNF @ Page 37.

Right from the start, the main character, Esther, is subsequently reflecting on the recent hanging of her lover while also crushing on someone new she just met. No thanks.

It took me a bit to get into this book but once I did, I was hooked. I would love to read more about the librarians and their adventures. For such a small book it packs a ton of commentary on the importance of community within underground revolutions against a totalitarian government.

It’s a great feeling when I finish a novella and wish it had been a novel, not because it felt unfinished or rushed, but because I don’t want to be done with it yet. Upright Women Wanted was a bit scary in the way the Handmaid’s Tale is scary—not so removed from our own society as to be totally implausible. I can only hope Gailey sees fit to revisit the librarians somewhere down the road.

Horse opera, a genre I didn't know existed. Apparently, "opera" just means it's trope-y, overexaggerated, and sweeping, like a soap opera. So a horse opera is a western that leans into stereotypes. This definitely fit the bill for a road-tripping western, something I don't read a lot of, but I enjoyed this one.

Loved.

“Everywhere,” Esther whispered to herself. “There are people like us everywhere.” Cye and Amity looked at each other, then back at Esther. “Yeah, Hopalong,” Cye said carefully. “People like us.”

“If there’s more like us, and if everywhere the State controls is the same … then I’d bet they’re just as scared as I’ve always been. I’d bet they’re just as hopeless.” She shook her head, looked down at her hands. “That’s not right. And if we can help make that stop, then I’m okay with not being alright.”
