This was a pretty good read, mostly because the characters were engaging and there was a welcome bit of silliness mixed in. I also liked Zoe, who escapes a stereotypical portrayal. While this wasn't the most literary, gripping suspense novel I've ever read, I did enjoy it.

THE PLOT

Forensic psychologist Dr. Zoe Bentley and BAU agent Tatum is called in to consult on a spooky af case in Chicago—but wait... could the serial killer stalking the corners of Chi city have ties to Zoe's creepy childhood???

MY OPINION

This is my second Mike Omer book following [b:Damaged Intentions|56982222|Damaged Intentions (Abby Mullen #2)|Mike Omer|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1627594979l/56982222._SY75_.jpg|89134475] which I LOVED. It's interesting reading older books after you've read the author's latest—you can see how much Omer has improved since A Killer's Mind. Safe to say, I liked Damaged Intentions much better.

This book was solid up until the last 30%. I liked Zoe, she was obviously intelligent, self-assured, but not a block of cheese... she was written with a bit of humor and quirk. Tatum was a little harder to put my thumb on—was he an asshole? An egomaniac? A lover not a hater? A baller? Did he wish he was a little bit taller? idk.

Anyways. The pacing was on point. I felt like I was watching an episode of Criminal Minds. Everything was flowing nicely with lots of action peppered throughout, and then things just started going downhill. Here's what happened:

- Zoe yeeted all logic and common sense out the window
- The plot holes in Zoe's flashbacks were GAPING. So a mans broke into your house and confessed to a whole ass murder/rape combo in great detail and you guys were like: oh silly lil girl, he was just coming over to have a chit chat about all the creepy murder paraphernalia you found in his bedroom. NBD.
- There were too many baddies in the frame... I mean is it even statistically possible??
- Zoe has a PhD and JD from Harvard but had to resort to stripping to distract the serial killer. GOOD BYE.

PROS AND CONS

Pros: kinda funny, I liked Zoe's character (for the most part), good pacing, intrigue was poppin

Cons: that last 30% and reducing zoe to her sexuality WHYYYYYYYYY

Some clunky bits but overall well written, and very engaging. I'll pick up the next installment, it's worth the time.

This book is fast-paced, action-paced, no nonsense thriller, with a solid plot based on sound logical reasoning. Perhaps this excellent aspect of the book is why it gets raving reviews and a high rating on Goodreads. After reading a bunch of books with plot holes, this book is refreshing. Unfortunately, nothing is perfect and the cast in this book is not quite my liking.

Zoe Bentley is a logical, high focused forensic psychologist who
Spoilerhas accurately deduced the real identity of a serial killer when she was just 14 and then
became a forensic psychologist
Spoilerbecause the police didn't believe her and tried to pin the murders on an innocent kid. As a result, the serial killer got away with the murders and continuously taunted Zoe with reminders of her past
. While Zoe is professional and does not wander to talk about clothes, jewelry or other elements that distract from the plot, she is also direct and cold, to the point it makes people feel like she's an a$$hole. However, this is not the main reason why I dislike Zoe, it's her carelessness with handling the case files. I'm also in the law enforcement business and there are strict guidelines as to how you can handle any information related to crimes. Therefore, it's extremely unacceptable
Spoilerfor Zoe to spread all the crime scene photos on the surface of a bar in full public view
. As a profiler, she should also be aware of the fact that serial killers might stick around and around investigating officers just to keep track of the investigation. Her action could have serious consequences and might even tip off the culprit. Other than that, she's a character that the readers can relate with (in a certain way) and the last part
Spoilerhow she handled the rescue of the family
was well done.

I'm also a bit put off by Tatum (is it just me or do images of Channing Tatum pop into people's mind when you try to imagine what Tatum's like? I know the description doesn't fit but somehow that name sticks so much I just can't shake the image off). He's not a bad character but the first time when he met Martinez, I thought he's an a$$hole. This probably is why I think Zoe and Tatum would make a wonderful couple and partners in crime detection (they're BOTH A$$HOLES) wwww.

The rest of the cast is fine, particularly Andrea (who doesn't like a cute little sister who can COOK wonderful meals and stick by you at all times?)

This book ends at a point where it makes me dying for the next book and though Zoe and Tatum started out as a$$holes, I think as the story progresses, they'll make a great team.
